In loving memory of Norman (Beanie) Burton Big Smoke from the Piikani Nation of the Blackfoot Confederacy. Beanie began his spiritual journey on Friday October 13, 2023, at the age of 60 years old. Beanie was a proud dad, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, cousin, uncle, nephew, and friend. Beanie spent his early childhood in Piikani and Town of Blairmore with his three brothers and mother Norma. Beanie was a survivor, and lived the Intergenerational trauma that was caused by the Indian residential school systems. It is said that these traumas are embedded into our DNA from our ancestors, those who were originally traumatized, and everyone gone before him. Beanie showed true characteristics of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) warrior through his bravery and physical strength back in his day. Beanie was a fighter right to the end when he got tired and was in a weaker state of health but would not think twice about protecting those he loved. Beanie had a great sense of self, a nice smile, took pride in his appearance and was very aware of his ability to attract the ladies. Beanie’s sense of humor was bold, raw, and brutally honest. He loved music. His favorites were Metallica, Guns N Roses, and Tom Petty to name a few. He was a very good dancer; he had the moves and maybe this was part of his charm with the ladies. Despite his tough demeaner, Beanie was a humble man like his ancestors and only took what he needed for survival. He also had a prayerful side, he expressed to his daughter Jody that he read the Bible throughout his life but had a hard time understanding it, nonetheless, he read the Bible, believed in prayer, and he knew how to pray having his own unique relationship with Jesus!
Beanie is survived by his precious daughter Jody Warrior (Grahm), grandchildren: Jayce, Blake, Hailey, Cleve, Amya, and great grandson Isaac. Daughter Twyla-Dawn Merrick (1982), grandchildren: Nadilie, Asher, and great granddaughter Nevahya. Daughter Sharise Smith. Son Cole Shade (1989) and grandson. Son Rylee Big Smoke (1991) and grandson Jayden. Son Jordan Big Smoke (1994). Son Chris Big Smoke-Gouda (2002). His brothers Angus (Gus) Big Smoke, Constable Willy Big Smoke & family. Aunties: Alice and Topsy, Uncles: Mark (Smokey) Big Smoke, Wilton Big Smoke, and the cousins too numerous to mention.
Beanie was predeceased by his Mother Norma Mary Big Smoke (42 years old in 1992), Father William (Sugar) Red Crow (62 years old), Grandmother Madeline Flammond (1993), Grandfather Tom Big Smoke (2005), Brother Alexander (Tweety) Big Smoke (2010). Aunties: Florence (1963), Joy (1973), Verna (1974), Judy (2002). Uncles: Norman (1986), Jimmie (2008).
Cousins: Oliver (1973), Johnny “Mean John” (1979), Leon “grasshopper” (1990), Evette (1991), Theresa “Annette” (2015), Gerry Louise (2018), Lisa Jolie Provost (2021), and special son in law, who resides in the spirit world, Pete Small Legs who was the one who brought Jody to her dad!
