On Thursday, October 12, 2023, Rachel passed away peacefully at The Apotex Centre in Toronto, with family by her side.
Family was always Rachel’s highest priority and greatest joy, throughout a life that saw her endure poverty, war, emigration, and sacrifice. Born in Afghanistan as the oldest of 11 siblings, she was like a second mother to the growing family. Along with so many others in the region, they made their way to the new state of Israel as refugees, where they built new lives. Rachel married her late husband Abe (Alan), a Holocaust Survivor, in 1958 while he was on a visit to Israel. She left her home in Israel and moved to Winnipeg with Abe. Rachel and Abe invested in a small grocery and worked long hours to provide a good education for their sons. Four of Rachel’s siblings followed her to Canada, creating a warm family hub. After retiring, Rachel and Abe moved to Toronto to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Rachel had a passion for cooking and the family has many fond memories of sitting together and sharing her delicious creations. To the end, Rachel remained in close contact with her siblings in both Canada and Israel, and will be deeply missed by them. Beloved mother of her devoted sons Kevin (Loraine) and Harvey (Erika); loving Savta to Isaac, Gabriel, Katrina, and Shawna; Doda Rachel to many dear nieces and nephews.
