CLAIRE CHIASSON
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Ina Claire Elizabeth Chiasson (nee Schmelzle), age 78 at St. Joseph’s Hospice on October 1, 2023, while surrounded by her family.
Born in Toronto on June 25, 1945, she moved to Fort William with her family at a young age. After attending public school and Selkirk High School, Claire was accepted to nursing school in Niagara Falls. Having to leave the nursing profession due to health issues, Claire later spent many years as a PSW and working at the Valhalla Hotel.
After her husband Gerard retired, they spent and extended 8-year vacation in Trudel, New Brunswick, to retire on the east coast surrounded by the extended family, before returning to Thunder Bay in 2001 to be closer to their sons and grandchildren.
An avid knitter, Claire knitted hundreds of pairs of mitts to be given away, warming many hands and hearts over the years. When not knitting, she enjoyed landscape painting and tending to her house plants and extensive flower garden. She was a lifelong member of Calvary Lutheran Church and enjoyed singing in the choir and writing devotions in her journals. Claire was also known for collecting funny stories and jokes and sharing them with all who would listen.
Claire is survived by her husband of 56 years, Gerard, sons Paul (Diane) and Christian, grandson Caydenn, brother Christian George (Wendy – passed 2003), sister Connie (Paul) Matarazzo, and many nieces and nephews
She was predeceased by her parents Christian Frederick and Mildred Schmelzle, brother Craig, granddaughter Chrysti, and nephews Martin and Alexander.
Funeral services will be held at CALVARY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2820 Donald Street East, and will be announced shortly. Interment will occur at a later date in the family plot. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
