In Celebration of
Anthony (Tony) Frederick Hamblin
August 9, 1939 –
October 2, 2023
Anthony (Tony) Frederick Hamblin was born in Centreville, New Brunswick on August 9, 1939 and died at Humber River Hospital following a brief illness on October 2, 2023. He is predeceased by his parents Priscilla and Frank Hamblin and his sister Mavis. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 54 years, Gail, his sons Drew (Erika) and Geoff (Eryn) his grandchildren Alex, Paige, William and Jack.
Tony started his career as an Investment Analyst with Confederation Life and worked there for eighteen years, reaching a pinnacle role as President of Confed Investment Counsel. An entrepreneur at heart he left Confederation life in 1984 to co-found Hamblin Watsa Investment Counsel with Prem Watsa.
Tony was an avid adventurer and aviation enthusiast since his teenage years, receiving his private pilot’s license through the Air Cadet Program. He dipped his toes in every ocean in the world and was thrilled to take the opportunity to fly Migs in Russia with his two sons. Never one to be afraid to take risks, and not being satisfied with just flying planes, he became involved in the resurrection of the iconic Found bush plane, becoming Owner and President of Found Aircraft. In his spare time, amongst several other hobbies, he built and flew amateur aircraft, including a scale replica of the P51 Mustang.
Tony was always on the move, enjoying his property and cottage on Lake of Bays where he was constantly involved in projects. He was an avid runner and sportsman, involved in racquet sports and all things fitness. At home, he was often to be found writing articles in his office, listening to a wide variety of music and plotting his next great adventure or business.
Generous to a fault, he never hesitated to take those in need under his wing. He was always supportive of his extended family, nieces, nephews, close personal friends and their children – mentoring dozens of them. He lent an ear when they were struggling to achieve their goals and a space in his home when they needed a place to live and prosper.
Our family would like to thank the nurses and PSWs at Parkland Retirement Residence who cared for Tony with respect and dedication. We appreciated the support of the medical and nursing staff at Baycrest Hospital, as they worked to find answers to the challenges of Alzheimer Dementia. We were grateful for the attentive and compassionate care of the medical and nursing staff at Humber River Hospital in the final days of his life.
In keeping with Tony’s wishes, cremation has already taken place. The family will receive people at a visitation to be held at the Butler Chapel of Turner and Porter on October 12th from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A celebration of Life will take place for the family members at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, should you wish to do so, donations may be sent to support the Alzheimer Society or any other charity of your choice.
