Sadly, our Shirley Ann passed away on September 19, 2023.
The eldest child of the late Douglas and Vera (Fleck) MacLaughlin of Middle Stewiacke, Nova Scotia. Predeceased by her partner of more than 50 years, Carole Thorne; sister-in-law Carla (Peterson); and niece Kim MacLaughlin.
Shirley is survived by sister Elaine MacLaughlin (Deanna Hawkins); brother James MacLaughlin; brother-in-law Dale Thorne; sister-in-law Jackie Black; niece Penny; nephew Daniel MacLaughlin; and grand nieces and nephews.
After joining the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1955, Shirley trained as a meteorological observer and obtained her private pilot’s license as well. The early 1960s found her posted overseas in France and Germany. After her European tour, Shirley transferred back to Greenwood NS, serving, until choosing voluntary discharge in 1964.
In the early 2000s, Shirley and Carole answered the lure to warmer climes, packed up, and moved to the Okanagan, settling in the Deer Park Estates retirement community near Oliver BC, where they enjoyed many years together. Shirley had a great love for the out of doors, and was an exceptional life-long photographer, with a special eye for capturing wildlife in their natural habitat.
Her family is grateful to the staff of the Oliver Hospital for their wonderful care, to her neighbours Jacquie Perceval and Marian Nelmes for their many kindnesses, and most particularly to Dale Thorne, for ever supporting Shirley.
