Rev Kenneth D H Gloade
Jan 19, 1948 – Sept 8, 2023
From fleeing a native reserve residential school to being the stepson of a bank robber to being a beloved Chaplain in a prison, Ken Gloade experienced wide diversity in his secular and spiritual life.
Ken was a Mi’kmaw native of the Shubenacadie Reserve in Nova Scotia. In 1953 his mother Christina took Ken and fled the Reserve illegally to escape the forced attendance of one of the worst residential schools in Canada to Boston, MA. Many years later she met and married William, who had been a bank robber for the Boston mob.
Ken’s step-grandmother invited him to Maine to give him a chance for a normal life. Ken quickly took advantage of the opportunity and graduated from high school in Kennebunk, Maine in 1966. He attended New Hampshire College in Accounting and Commerce for one year where he met his future wife, Joanna.
Around age 16 Ken felt God’s call to the ministry. He returned to Canada in 1968 to begin studies in history and pre-theology at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. In 1969, in his own words, he fled that call for 16 years. He worked for the Federal government, building a career with Parks Canada.
It was during those years that he developed his love of photography and became an accomplished photographer through the tutelage of professionals in the government field. Ken enjoyed taking pictures at official functions of politicians, VIP’s, and other wildlife. His breathtaking wildlife photos were shared with many – as well as the youth he led at Timmins Pentecostal Church for many years.
Ken was nothing if not well-educated. He graduated from Eastern Pentecostal Bible College (Master’s College & Seminary) in Peterborough, ON in 1989 with a Bachelor of Theology; Acadia University with a Master of Divinity in 1992, and years later a Master of Theology.
His career passion was preaching and teaching the Bible. He was preparing sermons right up to a month before his passing.
He assisted/pastored churches in the Maritimes, Quebec, and Ontario from 1987 to 1997, and then moved west to teach at Central (now Horizon) Pentecostal College in Saskatchewan for a year before moving to Timmins in 1998 to be the assistant pastor at Timmins Pentecostal Church.
All his experiences came together to prepare him to become the Duty Chaplain at Monteith Correctional Complex in 1999. He provided regular pastoral duties in the Corrections division and jail, as well as, providing five mandatory treatment counselling programs for the inmates until March 2023.
Ken was not just a pastor he was a servant. He was comfortable in all aspects of the church. Wherever he was, he attended and served every time the church doors opened. He was just as comfortable with children and youth as he was with adults. He used his dry sense of humour and his leading answers to get through to people. He would answer a question with just enough information to make those who were inclined to learn, to ask more questions.
Ken’s love was his family. His wife of 55 years, Joanna, daughter Heather (Dwayne) and son Christian (Jennifer) gave him much joy. This includes grandchildren Sarah, Kelsey, Allison, and Molly and two great-grandchildren Sophia and James.
Ken leaves behind half-sister Arlene and half-brother Mark, nieces, and nephews. Ken was predeceased by his mother Christina Herney Gloade Clark and stepfather William Clark.
Rev Ken Gloade has been loved too much to ever be forgotten. He has graduated to be with his Lord, whom he served faithfully.
Celebration of Life will take place October 14, 2023, at the Timmins Pentecostal Church, 850 Airport Rd at 11:00 am.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted with LESSARD-STEPHENS Funeral Home.
