Phyllis Beverly Hinton, Truronian and proud East Ender,
passed away on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at Debert
Court, 14 years to the day she lost her husband.
Born in Truro, Mom was the neighborhood marbles champ as a
child, sending many a young lad home after winning their marbles.
With a feisty, determined spirit and smart mind, Mom marched
to her own drum with dignity, grace and faith. An extremely hard
worker, she kept an immaculate home, taking pride in her garden,
African violets and Christmas cactus. She was a dedicated employee of
Stanfield’s for 39 years. A wonderful cook, her meatloaf,
potato scallop, apple crisp and lemon loaf were family favourites. Mom
always saved the chicken wishbone to see who pulled the bigger piece;
it was usually her. She loved her classic yellow rotary dial phone and
refused to update it.
On Valentine’s Day 1953, Mom and Dad (Ira) began their
married life until Dad’s passing on September 6, 2009. In 1963, they
moved to the home they loved dearly and took such pride in on
Brunswick Street, and were blessed to have the world’s best neighbors
for 59 years. In 1983, my parents world became complete with the birth
of their adored grandson, Adam; they were devoted
grandparents. Mom volunteered with the NS Heart and Stroke
Foundation for 25 years and was a long standing member of Brunswick
Street United Church.
Mom loved visits from her niece, Marilyn Gold and dear
brother, Russ, spending time with family, friends, and neighbors, her
much loved feline, Orwell, music, our long drives, watching golf and
Christmas Eve dinners with Al and Joan Gibson and their sons,
who are family to us. Mom was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt,
friend, neighbor and above all, a loyal, proud, wonderful
mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her love for us meant
everything. She was always, no matter what, there for us.
Life without her in our world is hard to begin to
comprehend.
Mom was predeceased by her husband, Ira; parents, Francis and
Myrtle (Whidden-Smith) Walsh; siblings and spouses, Dorothy (Millard)
Rector, Theresa (George) Burley, Verna (Russell) Stone, Dr.
Wyllie (Kaye) Smith, Gerald, Fairlie «Midgie» (Gordon)
Lynds; nieces, nephews and childhood lifelong best friend,
Joyce (Fowlie) Kent.
Mom will be forever missed by the loves of her life,
daughter, Cathy Joy; grandson, Adam and wife, Jessica; great
grandsons, Cohen and Avery; brother, Russell (Maureen) Walsh,
Dartmouth; several nieces, nephews and dear friend, Ev
Ripley.
My parents had the most wonderful neighbors who were and are
so special. Mom’s caring Debert Court visitors, Deb Pryor,
Joan Gibson and Jeanine Clague, were so good to her. We appreciate the
kindness of Mom’s former VON caregivers. For the past two
years, the exceptional, dedicated staff at Debert Court, provided
Mom/Nanny with beyond wonderful care, love and kindness. We are
forever grateful for each of you. Angels do live on this earth and we
found them in you.
As we move forward without our beloved Mom/Nanny,
arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home,
55 Young Street, Truro, where our family will receive friends from 4-7
p.m., Monday, September 11, 2023. Private family burial will take
place at a later date. If you wish to make a donation in
Phyllis’ memory, please consider VON or Colchester SPCA.

Mom always said, «Anyone can be there
in the good times. It is in the difficult times you find out who is in
your corner.» So many have helped us as we
navigated this long, sad goodbye. We hold you in our
heart.
Dementia is a cruel, heartbreaking disease. Cherish treasured
times and memories with those you hold close.
