Gladys Clarke (nee Crane) of Spaniard’s Bay passed away suddenly at Lane’s Retirement Home in St. John’s on September 3, 2023, just a few days shy of her 85th birthday. She was predeceased by her parents – William and Katie and her sisters Julia and Susie, and more recently by her beloved husband of more than 64 years (Hedley), only a short 10 months ago. She leaves to mourn a large circle of family and friends including her two brothers George (Gladys) and Mosses (Cathy) and sisters Violet (John) and Mary (Don). Her children, Hedley Jr (Marjorie-Marlene), Beverley (Barry), Philip (Charlotte) and Keith (Kelly) her 7 grandchildren (Katie, David, Tara, Ashley, Shane, Kathleen and Holly) and her 3 great grandchildren (Ayva, Parker and Paxton).
Gladys was a devoted wife, mother and nan and her first priority was her family. As the prototypical Newfoundland nan, she loved family gatherings and would cook and bake up a storm and you never left hungry! She often baked without a recipe and was famous for her ‘accardin’ cookies-according to what was in the cupboard. She made these cookies for decades and seldom were they the same but were usually good (and the ones that did not ‘turn out’ were still eaten).
While family was her priority, Gladys was a strong and independent woman in her own right. In their early years she was often the one at home with 3 or 4 children while Hedley worked away at construction. Once the children were older, she went back to work at the Moores fish plant in Hr. Grace where she became one of the first women to ‘fillet fish’. This led to her being unphased by much, even if you showed up unannounced with an entire volleyball team looking for supper and a place to sleep on a Friday night! She had her opinions, and she had her ways of letting you know them, which was probably most keenly felt by Beverley as her only daughter, but nobody was immune to this side of her personality. She was also oddly knowledgeable of world affairs and politics for a ‘girl from the Thicket’. She probably watched more sessions of Question Period on CPAC than many MPs have attended. Gladys, while being a ‘mother’ to all was also a unique and beautiful person and was loved by many. The staff at Lanes can attest to that as they cared for her over the past few months.
She will be truly missed but she lived a good life. As her family, we take comfort in that she is no longer in pain and is reunited with Hedley, as the past 10 months was the only time, they were truly apart in the last 70+ years. So, while we are all mourning the loss of our mother, please come join us and celebrate Gladys’ life during visitation at Slade’s Funeral Home, 488 Main Highway Spaniard’s Bay on Friday Sept 8th from 2-5 pm or on Saturday Sept 9th from 10 am – 12 pm, her funeral service will follow at Holy Redeemer Church, Spaniards Bay on Saturday Sept 9th at 2 pm with interment immediately after at Maul Tree Hill Cemetery, Spaniards Bay.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites those that are able, to donate to Holy Redeemer Anglican Church in Gladys’ name.
