It is with heavy hearts the family of Peter Stanley Joseph Hrysko announce his unexpected passing in the early morning hours of August 24th, 2023, at the Victoria General Hospital.
Born on October 17th, 1945, to Anna Marie (Drake) and Michael Stanley Hrysko, in Hamilton, Ontario, Peter was a ‘little’ brother to Gerald and Catherine (Nemeth) and ‘big’ brother to Margaret Anne Hrysko. Pre-deceased by his parents and brother Gerald, he is survived by his daughters Andrea and Anne Marie (Pitt), son-in-law Jeff, son Robert (Archambault), daughter -in-law Leanna and granddaughter Brooke, and son Michael (Christopher), daughter-in-law Danielle. Also surviving him are Margaret Ann, Catherine and Jim (Nemeth), their son Greg, daughter Veronica, husband Ernie (Brown) and their daughters Kyra and Noelle. He is also survived by his former wife Mildred (nee Lenyk) and current partner Sharon (Viger) Parsons, beloved dog Dooley (of the Rock), and stepchildren Grant and Craig Delaney, and Amanda Parsons.
Above all else, Peter loved his family. He was happiest getting together for holiday gatherings, bar-b-ques, games of Scrabble, Risk or Qwirkle… although not so much if he was losing. Peter also treasured completing 1000+ piece puzzles with family. He had an avid interest in science and space: the final frontier. He was an entrepreneurial thinker and a big dreamer who always encouraged his children to be creative. With a gigantic memory for jokes, he never ever forgot the punchline.
As a graphic designer, he was self-employed for most of his working life, creating logos, posters, brochures, maps, banners and designing websites for businesses in Canada and the USA. For 20+ years he was the proud creator and publisher of Camelid Quarterly, a trusted source of information for alpaca and llama owners both nationally and internationally.
On the less formal side, Peter seldom signed a card without drawing one of his cartoon characters beside his name, or his alter ego, Pierre LeBrush. His creativity expanded to wood working in the last few years and he would often stop to check out a piece of discarded furniture to a) see if it could be taken apart and repurposed and, b) determine if it would fit in the trunk of his car. He loved the smell of fresh cut wood in his workshop and proudly crafted solid furniture for his children.
Peter loved travelling and exploring out of the way spots, never failing to capture incredible images and memories of the experiences. He remained in awe of his first great adventure: 3 months in Europe with only $180 in his pocket – the sights, people, and the food; he took delight in all of it.
Peter was a superb chef. His specialties included cabbage rolls, spaghetti and meatballs, and his mother’s famous shortbread cookie recipe. Somehow, he always managed to wear a light-coloured shirt on spaghetti night.
His last great adventure took place in 2022 when Peter and Sharon seized the opportunity to return to British Columbia. Their home unexpectedly sold and thus began the cross-country journey from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Courtenay, BC in a motorhome with their trusty sidekick, Dooley. Peter had never driven a motorhome before but handled it like he had been born behind the wheel. The trip was not an ‘uneventful’ one: a blown air conditioning unit, an encounter with an errant kidney stone, a break-in while the unit was in for repairs…all annoyances that were greatly outweighed by the reconnections made with family, friends from his youth, and bonus friends made along the way.
After only 4 months in his new home in Port Alberni, Peter had a fall causing severe trauma to his brain, an injury from which he could not recover. After several days in the care of the esteemed staff at Victoria General Hospital, he passed peacefully with Sharon faithfully at his side.
By Peter’s request, a formal service will not be held.
