Obituary of Jessie Smith (Lays)
It is with sadness we announce the passing of our mother and sister Jessie Virginia Smith (Lays) on July 23, 2023 with her loving family at her side. The last few years were especially difficult for mom but her quick wit and sense of humour helped lighten even the toughest of times.
Jessie was born on Aug 25th, 1952, a daughter of George and Honey (Mary) Lays of Westville.
She is survived by her children Tom (Kim)MacEwan, Lynette MacEwan (Andrew) and Steven MacEwan; brothers, Tom (Maureen), Sandy, Peter (Elizabeth) and Jimmy (Marcia) Lays as well as sisters-in-law Mary Lays, Cheryl Lays and Michelle Lays; grandchildren; Grace, Aidan, Drew, Jonah, Noah, James, Claire, Brandon and Ally; stepchildren Kerri (Joseph), Stacy and Clint; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mom was a friend to many but was especially close with Joyce MacDonald, Kay MacLeod and Lorraine Taylor.
Jessie was predeceased by her husband Clarence “Butch” Smith; father George, mother Honey; brother Fred Sr., brother Bobby, sister Mary as well as several siblings lost in infancy, nephew Anton and former mother in law Shirley MacEwan.
Cremation has taken place. Arrangements will be announced at a later time.
We would like to thank our uncles – Tom, Sandy, Peter and Jimmy for taking care of their sister until the very end. She was so fortunate to be loved by you all.
Thank you to the staff at Valley View Villa for taking such great care of mom for the last few years. Your kindness, laughs and genuine care helped during such difficult times. A special thank you to Theresa Dooley, Crystal Spears and Aunt Edna for giving mom a little extra kindness and love.
