Margaret Cockshutt “Muggsie” (“Spike”) passed away peacefully on July 9 at Hazelton Place in her 97th year. Margaret was an educator, librarian, friend, nature lover, cyclist, theatre buff, beloved sister, aunt, and godmother. She studied at St. Hilda’s College at the University of Toronto, and went on to pursue a Master’s Degree in Library Science with a speciality in Classification Theory. She devoted her entire teaching career to the Faculty of Library and Information Science at U of T.
Margaret was born February 27, 1927 to Eric Morton Cockshutt and Kathleen Isobel Buck Cockshutt in Brantford, Ontario. She spent her summers swimming, sailing, canoeing, playing tennis, and revelling in the great outdoors at the family cottage “Carrying Place”, which she loved. Of her canoeing prowess, let it be noted that one Sunday after church, still in her Sunday best, she and a friend decided a quick canoe trip around the bay before lunch would be just the thing. Yes, of course they dumped, but all we heard were gales of her unmistakeable laughter.
Always a great lover of the arts, Margaret began a tradition upon her retirement: “14 Plays in 14 Days”, with an annual trip to London, England where she enjoyed both West End offerings as well as more avant-garde fare. Closer to home, she was a regular at Stratford and a generous supporter of many Toronto theatre companies.
Aunt Muggsie was devoted to her family; to her brother Philip, (brother Paul Foster Cockshutt, predeceased), her nieces and nephews Martha (Bill), Catherine, Eric (Jennifer), Amanda (Doug) and Paul (Alison), as well as a multitude of great nieces and nephews: Rachel (Bub), John (Elly), Rosie (Collin), Malcolm, Hannah, Will, Maeve, and Emmeline. She was the definition of “Favourite Aunt” – kind, generous, thoughtful, supportive, and always willing to offer helpful advice.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Margaret’s caregivers Rose and Estella at Hazelton Place for their loving care and thoughtfulness.
Cremation has taken place, to be followed by a private family service. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice in Margaret’s honour.
