Obituary of Lincoln North
With broken hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Linc on Sunday, July 2, 2023 at the Ontario Finnish Rest Home. Beloved husband and friend of Shirley for 47 years. He will be sadly missed by his children and grandchildren. Linc will be fondly remembered by the Cormier and the North families.
Linc was a real estate appraiser, analyst, counselor, and arbitrator since 1959. His preferred are of practice was focused on serving as an arbitrator and mediator in general commercial and real estate related disputes, resolving highly complex valuations-related issues, and working with restructuring of valuation and arbitration associations in Central and Eastern Europe, following the breakup of the Soviet Union. Linc was an Accredited Member (AACI), Fellow and Past President of the Appraisal Institute of Canada and also an active or retired member of the (American) Appraisal Institute (MAI), the American Society of Real Estate Counselors (CRE), L’Ordre des Evaluateurs Agréé du Quebec (EA), the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario (P. Eng.), the Arbitration & Mediation Institute of Ontario (Chartered Arbitrator), the American Arbitration Association and the Association of Ontario Land Economists (PLE). He is also an Honourary Member of the Australian Institute of Valuers and Land Economists (AVLE), the New Zealand Institute of Valuers (NZIV) and a founding member of Valuation Network Limited, an international consortium of independent real estate appraisal and consulting firms. Linc served as the Canadian delegate and Chairman of the International Valuation Standards Committee until 1997; this sixty-nation group having the remit of creating and publishing international valuations standard for financial reporting. He also served as Chairman of the Pan Pacific Congress of Real Estate Appraisers, Valuers, and Counselors, and is an associate member of the Canadian Property Tax Association, an associate member of the International Council of Shopping Centres, and a past member of the Accounting Research Advisory Board of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.
A graduate civil engineer (B.S.C.E., Michigan Technological University, 1957) and former assistant professor at McGill University. Linc has written numerous articles and professional monographs and has delivered professional papers in Australia, Belgium, Bermuda, The Czech Republic, England, Estonia, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Lithuania, Malaysia, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Singapore, and in the United States. He lectured across Canada and internationally on valuation and arbitration matters. He is also the author of the text Real Estate Investment Analysis and Valuation, the editor of the Handbook of Guidelines for the Valuation of Investment Properties, the author of research and position papers on The Concept of Highest and Best Use, Foreign Investment in Canadian Real Estate, Market Rent, Arbitration and Other Dispute Resolution Processes in Canada, the Appraisal Practice in Central and Eastern Europe. The latter three papers have been published in Canada, Lithuania, New Zealand, Poland, Russia and the United States. He has also participated in drafting legislation relating to Federal and Provincial Government appraisal standards. A Canadian, he was an officer in the 9th Infantry Division of the US Army, following university graduation.
After retiring, Linc enjoyed occasional arbitration and mediation assignments, and serving as a legal agent in cases before the POA court. He designed residential dwellings on occasion and wrote extensively on marine-related matters for the Great Lakes boaters. Both Linc and Shirley served as editors and publishers of the North of Forty Six newsletter, a 15 plus page, full colour document published five times annually. His engineering activities focused on supervision of harbour and marina infrastructure development. Linc and Shirley took great pleasure on the Great Lakes and travelling the world. Although Linc was not successful in being awarded the Order of Canada, he knew it was a great honour just to be nominated.
