Obituary of Stanley Herbert King
On Monday June 26, 2023, Stanley Herbert King passed away at Riverview Long-term Care Centre. Our Dad will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A resident of St. Vital for over 55 years, he is survived by his son Glenn (Cathy), and Bradley (Denise) and grandsons Alexandre and Nicolas. He is predeceased by his wife Mary,
Stan was the eldest King Son of Herb King and Eleanor (nee Layton). He is predeceased by his parents, brother Donald King and half brothers Gordon, Roy, Barrie, and Robert Neal. Dad has not been in recent contact with half brothers Martin and Jack. Stan’s roots are from Ireland and England.
Stan was born on August 14, 1936, and grew up on Washington Avenue in East Kildonan. He was a very good hockey player, wingman for the Weston Juveniles winning the Championship, in 1955. He played with teammates that ended up playing in the NHL. Stan attended Miles Macdonell Collegiate in EK.
Stanley met his sweetheart Mary on the bus in East Kildonan, they dated and married, 54 years. They lived first in the Osborne Street area but moved to St. Vital on St. Annes Road and then Worthington where they had plenty of friends, who sadly have also left this world.
Family gatherings at both Stan and Mary’s sides of the family, were frequent and fun. There were family picnics to such places as Camp Chestly and yearly outings to Grand Beach and to brother Barry’s, which were never boring. Stan always enjoyed chatting and kibitzing with the Meyer clan.
Stan enjoyed sports as player, coach, and parent. He encouraged Glenn to join hockey and watched Glenn and Brad play football, hockey, and baseball.
Stanley had various jobs in his early adulthood including district manager for Tribune, Shoe salesman, working at Dominion bridge and then finally landing his longtime career with Canada Post as letter carrier. Most of his 30-year career was in the St. Vital /Windsor Park area, ending in his downtown ‘walk’.
Stan became a member of the Catholic church in his adult life and a long-time attendant with Mary and boys at St. Emile Church. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus.
Stan retired in 1996 from the post office and had a long retirement. He and Mary enjoyed relaxing, listening to CJOB, visiting with family, and enjoyed watching their two grandchildren grow. Stan enjoyed walking everywhere from home to St. Vital Center and many other places.
Our family would like to extend a thank you to the staff at Riverview Health Centre for their care.
Stanley was cremated and a notice will go out for a service in August 2023.
