Passed peacefully away in the presence of his loving wife and children on June 27th, 2023, Kevin Harding formerly of Creston North Marystown. Celebrating and cherishing his life are his wife of 58 years, Lenora Harding along with children Brenda Callahan (Chris), Michella Harding (Norman Hanlon), Derick Harding, Sharon Harding-King (Shane), and Janet Pink (Leonard). Dad was always comforting and supportive; showing us what love and respect was in the way that he cared for our Mom. He was always there through ups and downs teaching us to work hard and enjoy everything life has to offer.
Dad was also a devoted Grandfather to Christopher Harding (Jennifer), Courtney King (Jesse Mann), Ryan Callahan (Zara), Caitlynn Crane (Lee), Jonathan Pink, Peridot Harding, and Liam Callahan. He was also an attentive Great-Grandfather to Ryleigh and Wesley Crane for which he felt so blessed.
Kevin was a wonderful son to Wesley and Eileen Harding, along with being a concerned brother to Angie Fitzpatrick (Con) and Jeannette Zamzam (Parvis). He was a Uncle and Great Uncle to many nieces and nephews along with having many cousins near and far.
Either through work or pleasure, Dad developed many close friendships; and we always enjoyed hearing his stories. Over the years he worked as a picker at an Ontario tobacco farm and a machine shop in Toronto. As an accomplished welder he had many jobs: IOC in Wabush, the Marystown Shipyard, the Fluorspar Mine in St. Lawrence, Department of Transportation (High Roads), finally opening his own business in Creston North – Harding’s Welding and Auto. After selling his business and retiring, he continued to work at the St. Lawrence Fish Plant.
Never an idle man, Dad was dependable and always ready for a new job. Equipped with his Chevy pickup and welding machine, he worked for many people on the Burin Peninsula from local businesses and clergy to neighbours down the street or across the bay. Everyone knew they could rely on Dad for a job well done.
One of Dad’s proudest accomplishments was building an 18 foot latted boat – in his basement no less. This started many adventures on the water including cod fishing, picking mussels off The Big Rock, squid jigging, dragging for scallops and picnics on a nearby sandy beach.
Dad always put family first and we had many camping trips across the island – grandparents in tow. We enjoyed skidooing on Garnish Pond, ice fishing, skating, checking rabbit snares, cook ups at the cabin, swimming and trouting at Rattling Brook. He enjoyed taking us for a Sunday Drive always ending with the ice cream treat. The man we called Dad was someone we all looked up to and could only hope that we were the same as we grew into adults ourselves. He treated everyone fairly, loved us all, and never once said that he wished for a different life.
Although impossible to list everyone, we would like to mention some of those special friends; Gordon and Georgina Hollett, George and Millie Brushett along with Diane, David and Sandra Emberley. We would like to acknowledge Dr. George Goucher, Shauna Walsh N.P., Dr. Chris Earle, Dr. David Dalton, all the nurses and support staff of 5SB at the Health Sciences Centre along with Dr. Roger Bulter and staff of Home Dementia Program. Your kindness and professionalism will always be remembered.
Anyone wishing to honor Kevin’s lifelong commitment to his family, friends, and community can make donations to the Alzheimer’s Society or Canadian Cancer Society (NL Division) in his name.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at 2:00pm from the Creston South United Church, Marystown. A reception will be held at the church following the service.
“Picture a wave in the ocean. You can see it, measure its height; the way the sunlight refracts when it passes through like a rainbow. It’s there and you can see it; you know it and know what it is – it’s a wave. It crashes into the shore and then it’s gone, but the water remains. The wave was a different way for the water to be for a little while, but then it returns to the ocean where it came from and where it is supposed to be.”
