Lawrence (Larry) Paul Bauer, 79 of Vancouver B.C., son of the late Robert Lawrence Bauer and late Dorothy Estelle Bauer (née Harper) of Moncton N.B. passed away suddenly in Vancouver on Wednesday 14th June 2023
Larry was born in Moncton N.B. where he was raised. His early education was at Queen’s street, Mountain Road Elementary, and Moncton High School, graduating in 1961. Larry then went on to teacher’s college in Fredricton N.B. and pursued studies leading to his Bachelor of Education at the University of New Brunswick. He also undertook studies at the University of Montréal.
Larry started his teaching career in St-John N.B.
From St-John, Larry took up a teaching position in Wabush Labrador, where he stayed for two years. In 1970, Larry journeyed west to Osoyoos B.C. where he assumed a teaching position at Osoyoos Elementary and Junior Secondary school and the Osoyoos Senior Secondary School.
In 1983, Larry took teaching position at Talmud-Torah School in Vancouver B.C.
Larry was pre-deceased by his twin brother who died at four years of age, brothers-in-law Bruno, Jack, and Phillip Morgan and sisters-in-law, Eileen, Delicate, and Anna Sharkey. Larry is survived by his partner in life, Robert Morgan of Vancouver B.C., and sister-in-law Maryon (Marcus) MacRae, and a number of cousins. Larry and Robert were life partners for 44 years.
As a young teen, Larry took lessons in figure skating . After a number of years of study, developing his skating skills, Larry skated professionally in the chorus of the Ice Capades. While teaching at Osyoos in the Okanagan, Larry taught figure skating to students ranging in age of pre-teens to teens. Each year that group would stage an ice show at the end of the year.
Larry was a long time member of Saint-Mark Parrish, located on the grounds of the University of British Columbia. He was involved in recruiting and scheduling the lectors assignments for the Parrish. Larry had a great devotion to divine mercy. He recited the divine mercy chaplet daily.
In his teaching career at Osseous Secondary teaching French and Drama/ Theatre, he mounted one-act plays and had his students participate in drama festivals where some of the productions went on to the provincial drama festival.
During his years a Talmud-Torah, also teaching French and Drama to students from primary to grade seven, Larry staged many drama productions at the school, including musicals (working with Jill Davies and Alison Bennett). His students always looked forward to his drama classes, and was highly respected throughout his career by staff, students and parents. One particular student was Seth Rogan, who went on to an acting career on stage and screen in Hollywood. Larry told many stories about Seth’s creativity and talents during his formative years.
During his teaching career and even after retirement Larry and his partner, Robert took on the role of coordinators and organizers in seven of the annual drama conference of Association of B.C. Drama Educators (ABCDE). These occasions were very successful and always a highlight for secondary and elementary school teachers (especially for Drama and acting teacher).
Larry throughout his life had a great love of music; a capable pianist playing by ear. He had an appealing singing voice, able to perfectly harmonize with other singers. Larry and Robert, after retirement went on numerous cruises across the globe on Celebrity Cruise lines, visiting Alaska, the Caribbean, Panama Canal, South and Central America, and Hawaii. They found the cruise experience exciting–and opening to various areas of the world, meeting a group of new friends, staying in contact for the years to come.
Larry maintained contact with his teacher colleagues, friends, and family across Canada, the US and South Africa. Later in life, Larry experienced a setback in his health in 2019, suffering a stroke which was not impairing, but due to high blood pressure, his kidneys were affected, necessitating the implant of a fistula leading to begin life-sustaining kidney dialysis, beginning in early 2022 until his passing in June 2023.
Throughout the past few years, Larry was diligent in sending e-mail updates to all his friends and family with details of his and Robert’s daily activities, reflecting on the challenges of dialysis, dining experiences, and travels in spite of health restrictions. His latest updates, chronicling his trip to California. All who received Larry’s familiar «ALL CAPS» updates looked forward to the detailed notes on dining experiences and travels he and Robert went on every day. Whether in person or through his sunny updates, Larry had a positive, and entertaining way of sharing his stories. Larry was a great story teller.
Larry was a devoted and caring son, who each summer would return to Moncton to support his father and mother, caring especially for his mother, who suffered a stroke in 1989.
Over the years Larry and Robert welcomed many people into their West End home for dinners and gatherings. The couple were especially known for their annual, fully-decorated ‘Valentine’s Delight’ parties hosted over 25 years. They welcomed couples and singles for warm fellowship in the celebration of love, with a lavish spread of delicious foods, hors d’oeuvres, on a buffet table replete with Larry’s famous Caesar Salad, ‘imported’ Honey Baked Ham, wines and the famous punch with a kick, and desserts of Key Lime Pie, and the Rainbow & Valentine’s Delight sheet cake.
Larry was a truly caring, kind, thoughtful and giving person. As one of his teaching colleagues shared …’an incredibly warm, creative, and considerate man—always full of great stories and much laughter.» Another friend said, …»Larry was a role model to them , with such a good attitude to life and its challenges.»
Larry was always concerned about the well-being of others, most especially that of his partner in life, Robert Morgan. Larry will be deeply missed by all who knew him–especially by Robert.
We wish to thank a number of the nursing staff in the Renal Dept. at Saint-Paul’s Hospital who administered dialysis to Larry over the past two years, and his Nephrologists, particularly Dr. M. Kiaii and Dr. Brad Witsyk.
