Known
affectionately as Kay to all family and friends, our beloved mother,
Granny, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away quietly in
Antigonish, Nova Scotia, on June 10, 2023, following a brief
illness.
Kay was born
March 17, 1930, in Banbury, England, to Florence (Flo) and Charles
(Charlie) Vincent. Having grown up through the London Blitz, spending
time in both city and countryside, Kay likely caught her lifelong bug
for travel from her parents. Early trips with her family included
destinations in southern Europe and Northern
Africa.
Kay worked in
a linen shop through her early twenties before setting sail from
England, wearing a suit, carrying a small suitcase and with one tube
of lipstick, on what she planned to be an around-the-world trip. While
pausing in Vancouver, Canada, to again work in retail to earn money
for the next phase of her voyage, she met the love of her life, Art
Brogden. After a courtship, she sailed back to England to tell her
parents she would be getting married and emigrating to
Canada.
Kay and Art
were married June 1, 1957, in Toronto, Ontario, where they first
settled and, in October of 1958, had their first child. Raising four
children together, over the years, the family lived in Toronto, Port
Moody, BC, and then back to Mississauga, ON, before moving to Regina,
SK, in 1982, where Kay lived for most of the next four decades. She
moved to Antigonish last year, settling at The Maples, and near her
son John and his family.
Kay resumed
her love of travelling as her children grew, be it a family trip to
Myrtle Beach, SC, camping in Algonquin Park, or traipsing through
extensively designed (by Art that is) church tours of England with
teenagers in tow. Kay and Art travelled to Hawaii, New Zealand,
Australia, and, of course, made many trips to Ontario and British
Columbia when their grandchildren were
young.
Throughout
many years spent in Regina, following Art’s death in 1994,
Kay was an active volunteer in the community, including at Wascana
Rehab. A long-time fiber artist, Kay did many fine needlepoint pieces,
and could often be found knitting many, many mittens and warm scarves
to donate to her Anglican Church
community.
Kay rode
horses as a girl and played tennis into her late thirties, winning
many local competitions. She loved swimming, whether at a beach or in
the family’s back-yard pool, she was always active. In her
sixties, she took up golf, and walked daily the 4km around Wascana
Lake. She travelled extensively with friends and accomplished much of
the world tour not yet complete, to destinations as wide ranging as
Thailand, Bali, Cuba, and Portugal, as well as golf trips all around
Saskatchewan and sometimes to
Arizona.
Kay had great
appreciation for her friends, whether on the golf course, at the card
table or on a cruise ship. She was dedicated to correspondence, and
even at 93, was so pleased to send cards, and also to receive cards
from friends, be it Audrey Williams or Donalda Ford in Regina, a note
or card from a grandchild, or from cousins back in
England.
Kay was
preceded in death by her husband Arthur Brogden, her brother Frank
(Connie) Vincent, her son Mark Brogden, her grandson Levi Brogden and
her stepdaughter Debra Brogden.
She is
survived by her son, Paul Brogden; daughter, Elaine Brogden (Brad);
and son, John (Lace Marie) Brogden; daughter-in-law, Brenda Brogden;
and stepdaughter, Christine (Jerry) Kunkel (née Brogden).
She leaves behind eight grandchildren, Michael, Laura, Kelsey, Emma,
Nash, Moses, Sophie, and Hannah Gray, as well as two
great-grandchildren, Noah and
Charlotte.
A celebration
of life will be held at The Maples, in Antigonish, Nova
Scotia, on Friday, June 16th, 2023, at 10
a.m.
