Obituary
Swan, Dr. Margaret Alice (1930 – 2023), B.A., B.Ed., M.Ed., Educator – age 93, Truro, passed away May 26th, 2023 in East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash. Born in Oxford, she was a daughter of the late Perce and Evelyn (Gilroy) Swan. She attended Mount Allison and Acadia Universities from which she received degrees. She then studied at the Universities of Exeter and London in England. In Nova Scotia she taught school in Middleton, Amherst, Tatamagouche and Truro. She acted as associate professor of Language Arts, Chairperson of the Intermediate Elementary Program, Vice-Principal and Principal of the Nova Scotia Teachers College. Marg was the co-author of the book Assessing Language Development and the Canadian editor of the Experiences in Language series. Mount Saint Vincent University conferred upon her an honorary doctorate. She also was a recipient of the 125 Commemorative Medal. Marg served as a commissioner of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission, a chairperson of Literacy Nova Scotia and a member of the Truro Parks and Recreation Commission. She was an adherent of First United Church, Truro. Marg had a plethora of interests including sports, travel, her garden, classical music and the Arts. She lived a full life; on her terms. After retirement she stayed active in the Commissions she was involved with until her health deteriorated. She split her time between Truro where she walked daily in her beloved Victoria Park and Cape Forchu where she enjoyed the cold ocean. She is survived by her nieces, Lee (Kurt) Fischer, Susan Swan (Bob Nagyobb), Peg (Dave) Proctor, Barb (Wes) Pringle; nephews, Fred (Gloria) Salter, Jim (Charmaine) Salter, Peter Swan (Linda Todd) and brother-in-law, Carl Salter, and their families. They always looked forward to a saucy birthday card in the mail. She was predeceased by her brother, Dave (Leone) Swan; sister, Nancy Salter; nephews, David Salter, John Swan; niece, Beth Grams; and long-time friend, Helen Beveridge. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 4th in MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Oxford.
