Arlie Blanche (Scruton) Barzo
May 2, 1938 – May 28, 2023
Peacefully at Woodstock General Hospital, on Pentecost Sunday, May 28 2023, Arlie (Scruton) Barzo passed away in the loving embrace of her family after battling several illnesses at the age of 85.
Born and raised in Vienna, Ontario she spent most of her life there, as a child riding her horses and walking to school with her sister, cousins and friends, climbing the local hills and ravines through all kinds of weather. She always thought of Vienna as her home.
Nursing was her calling and in 1960 she graduated from Elgin General Hospital School of Nursing and immediately began working as a Registered Nurse.
She quickly found her services in demand at various hospitals. Beginning with Elgin General in St. Thomas she then moved on to the former Ontario Hospital and then to London and the former Byron Sanitorium.
A big leap was made to Toronto where she worked at the Hospital for Sick Children.
Moving back to Tillsonburg, she found work locally at TDMH before beginning her full time job as mother and proud tobacco producer. The best days of her life were the times when tobacco dominated the tri county area.
She much later returned to nursing, caring for geriatric residents for 20 years both in Port Burwell and Delhi.
After retiring she continued helping those residents for a time by volunteering to aid them with walking and exercise programs, causes in which she firmly believed.
Predeceased by her infant daughter Mary Joanne (1962) her father Charles (1970) and her mother Blanche (1976).
Arlie is survived by her son Joseph Michael Barzo and her daughter Susan Blanche Barzo and their father Joseph Barzo as well as Susan’s family (Alison Blackler) and beloved granddaughter Tenley Blackler along with 3 sisters and their families.
Carol Juhasz (Frank) and their family, Christena Roesch (Robert) and their family and Shirley Hillner (late George Hillner). Also survived by William Gheysen, partner in business at Delhi Long Term Care and in life in Vienna for many years along with several nieces and nephews. She was loved by many friends in Port Burwell, Vienna, Straffordville, Tillsonburg and Delhi. Her stomping grounds and she liked to say.
Family and friends will be received for visitation at Ostrander’s Funeral Home, 43 Bidwell Street, Tillsonburg, ON N4G 3T6 (519) 842-5221 on Friday June 2, 2023 from 9:00am until 11:00am. The Funeral Service for Arlie will begin at 11:00am following the visitation. Rev. Robert Clifford to officiate. Interment in St. Luke’s Cemetery in Vienna.
Memorial donations to the Helping Hand Food Bank in Tillsonburg or to St. Vincent de Paul Society would be gratefully appreciated and may be arranged through Ostrander’s Funeral Home.
Her family wishes to express their thanks to all of the caring doctors, nurses and staff that helped us during her wellness journey. A journey that took her to St. Thomas General Hospital, Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital, Brantford General Hospital and finally to Woodstock General Hospital.
Special thanks to all of the staff and management at her former residence, the Tillsonburg Retirement Center for all of the extra care, support and attention shown to mom over the last 15 months.
