It is with deep sadness that we announce the demise of Lauchlin Edwin MacDonald, on May 23, 2023. In his journey, he always embarked upon enthusiasm and expectation for the next phase.
‘Ed’ was born in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and grew up in the iconic village of Baddeck. He was the son of Sara Jessie (Brown) MacDonald and Lauchlin Edwin MacDonald, Sr., who was the Sheriff of Victoria County, Cape Breton, for over forty years. Ed’s love of Cape Breton was deeply embedded – and he often referred to those early days as – ‘A childhood too good to forget’.
Ed joined the Royal Bank of Canada in the early 1950’s. The foregoing was the beginning of a career spanning over 39 years – stretching across five Provinces, in Branch and ever-increasing Senior Administrative responsibilities.
On May 22, 1965, he married J. Audrey Johnson, in Montreal, PQ, and she became his life partner and best friend. They traveled extensively and enjoyed their time living in Montreal, Toronto, Whitby and Glengarry. It is most important to mention that there was always a ‘dog’ (or two), as family members.
Ed was predeceased by his parents – Sara (Brown) MacDonald and ‘Lauchie’ A.Y. MacDonald, as well as two sisters – Lillian Edwina (died in infancy), Baddeck, C.B. and Alice Elizabeth Muir (the late Fred), Moncton, NB. Also, one brother, Alexander Young – ‘Sandy’ MacDonald, (the late Daisy McKillop), B.C. He leaves to mourn, his sister – Jean Lamond Wilson (the late Warren), London, ON.
Ed is survived by J. Audrey (Johnson) MacDonald – his wife of fifty-eight years – as well as his several nieces, nephews and many friends.
Ed had a lifelong love of reading the written word…a gift, no doubt, from his schoolteacher Mother and Ed could certainly turn his hand to some well-crafted verse.
Of course, ‘Sports’ were also a lifelong interest – he was a ‘Maple Leaf’ fan from the Foster Hewitt years. Ed also had a deep love of baseball and the ‘Toronto Blue Jays’. We must also mention Ed’s love of music…especially Country Music – such as George Jones, Merle Haggard and several other vocalists. Ed often entertained friends and family – playing and singing many of the old favorite tunes.
Ed will be sadly missed by all those who had the opportunity of meeting and getting to know him. He was caring, honest, trustworthy…and a man of many strong qualities.
In lieu of flowers, any tribute could be directed to the O.S.P.C.A., (S.D. & G. Branch), P.O. Box 52, 550 Boundary Rd., Cornwall, ON, K6H 5S3.
At Ed’s request, there will be no visitation. There will be a service on Saturday, June 24, 2023 at 3 p.m. at the Kirk Hill United Church, 20915 Laggan-Glenelg Road, Dalkeith, ON, K0B 1E0. The family will be present at 2 p.m. to receive condolences.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Munro & Morris Funeral Homes Ltd., 114 Main Street South, Alexandria, ON, K0C 1A0. (613-525-2772).
