Obituary
Judith Anne Huntress of Tamworth passed away suddenly at the age of 79 at the Lennox and Addington County Hospital in Napanee after a very brief illness. Beloved wife of Peter Tylus and sister to David Huntress (Diane) of Denver, Colorado. Sister-in-law of Felicia Tylus of Appin, ON; Francis Tylus (Cathy) of Delaware, ON; Shelley Keeler (Dan) of Chatham, ON; Marsha Stevens (Bill) of Howdenvale and Ed Hickman (Ann) of Woodbridge, ON. Also survived by her mother-in-law Mary Hickman (late James) of Cambridge and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Charles and Bonnie Huntress. Born in Oklahoma in 1943, Judith known previously as Huntress/Allsopp was a talented postwar and contemporary artist whose career spanned several decades. She studied art in Kansas and Great Britain and had work exhibited in the United Kingdom where she lived for a time. Her first real breakthrough came when she took part in an Emma Lake Workshop in Saskatchewan in 1969. Her works have been exhibited in various Toronto galleries including Gallery One in 1978 where critics commented on its originality and consistency. She also exhibited at the YYZ Artists’ Outlet 1980. Additionally, the MacKenzie Art Gallery of Regina, Saskatchewan has featured her works. Most recently 2019 the MacKenzie Art Gallery created an exhibition for several artists including Judith called Superscreen; it featured artists who were members of the Grand Western Canadian Screen Shop – the first artist co-operative in the Prairies. She taught briefly at York University in Toronto in the early 80’s. Judith was invited and did participate in the Djerassi Resident artists program in Woodside California in 1985. She wrote articles for the Artist Review and for the Scoop, a local paper published in Tamworth. Judith was intelligent, articulate and had many political opinions along with a great sense of humour and a hearty deep laugh. Friends described her as unique, elegant and interested in people’s lives. Judith was an avid reader and loved to discuss books and ideas with friends and with her book club. She enjoyed participating in services every Sunday at Christ Church Anglican, in Tamworth. Judith was devoted to her husband Peter and thought the world of him. She will be greatly missed by him and by her many friends and her family. The family would like to thank the emergency and ICU staff at Lennox & Addington Hospital for the care and compassion received. Cremation has taken place and there will be a graveside memorial service held at Christ Church Cemetery in Tamworth on Saturday, May 27 at 11: 00 a.m. Memorial donations made to the Cancer society of Canada or Lennox & Addington Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family. A video of the service can be viewed on this website after 3 p.m. on the day of service, May 27, 2023.
