Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Mary Sophia Bourgeois announce her passing at the Western Long Term Care Home in Corner Brook on Friday May 5th, 2023 at the age of 92 years.
Mary’s early life was one of hardship and turmoil. Never knowing her parents, she lived with her grandparents. Upon the death of her grandfather, Mary was removed from school by her grandmother at age 14 years to work in the fields. Subsequently, her marriage at the age of 18 also endured many trials and tribulations, among which was the ultimate mother’s suffering – the loss of a child- but Mary had lost 3. Fast forward to an additional 9 children all spiritually and morally equipped, raised single-handedly in most part by Mary. They all went on to lead productive lives.
Having developed the backbone and inner strength of a whale, Mary’s own independent life began. She had an incessant smile directed at anyone who glanced her way. Her unbelievably pleasant demeanor was admirable. Her love for her children was apparent in every card, gift, and message she sent. Mary led a quiet but immensely peaceful life. She enjoyed daily nature walks, relishing in the possibility of any sign of wildlife and returning with wildflowers or seasonal berries. She loved all animals; her multiple spoiled dogs were evidence to this. In addition she gave annually to many pet and rescue organizations among many others, upwards of 30; as well as sponsoring 2 children overseas. She was an avid card and crib player and did this regularly with friends and relatives. Local live entertainment brought optimum joy to Mary and she never refused an invitation. In spare time, music played in the background, she often hand-wrote lyrics to favourite songs which she sang while baking bread, desserts or cooking up a “scoff”. She loved company, loved people and welcomed any chance to socialize. There was always a homemade baked good available in anticipation of possible company. Quilting and knitting were two more of Mary’s abundant interests. Many of these creations will adorn her children’s homes for years to come. During daily quiet time she could be found reading books and spiritual pamphlets. She prayed daily, always said grace and raised her children to daily rosary, and weekly church service.
Between a rough early life and her adherence to religion, these are what undoubtedly saw Mary through and what created and formed the strongest, most loving, beautiful human being possible; one which family and friends will forever miss.
Mary leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories: 3 sons: Eddy of Kippens, Gerard (Juanita) of Stephenville Crossing and Wade (Kala) of Ontario; 6 daughters: Linda (Len) Ransom of Ontario, Lorraine Hartlin of Nova Scotia, Carolyn Bourgeois of Ontario, Cathy (Claude) Bourgeois of Alberta, Genevieve Bourgeois of Corner Brook and Geraldine (Frank) Morita of British Columbia.
Also leaving to mourn: sister Mildred of Ontario; 6 grandchildren: Darrell, Jennifer, Stephen, Sonya, Kimberly, and Tara; along with 3 great grandchildren: Savannah, Norah and Zoe; and many other relatives and friends.
