Our mother, Marion Patricia (Tricia) Horne loved life and loved living it. She believed in taking advantage of every opportunity presented to her and did so with panache.
Mom was the first born, on January 16, 1929 and the last surviving child, quietly passing on April 26, 2023, of the late John and Lucy Dorman of Vancouver. She was predeceased by her sister Shirley Coates RN and brothers Dr. Garth Dorman and Captain David Dorman.
At the age of 3 months, Mom made the first of over three dozen voyages on the Union Steamships from Vancouver to Cracroft Island, spending idyllic summers in the Broughton Archipelago.
Her father, a pioneer in the area was honoured by having Dorman Island named after him in the late 1930’s.
It was on one of these Union Steamship voyages that Mom met our father John Horne when she was 13 and he was 15.
Mom graduated from Lord Bing High school in West Point Grey and completed first year at the University of British Columbia before joining the editorial department at The Vancouver Sun.
Mom and Dad, now second officer of Union Steamship Cardina, were married in 1949 and raised four children. As a young wife she continued to work at The Sun and socialize with her friends and family even when Dad was away at sea. As a mother to Nesta (Bob), Ian (Karen), Megan (John) and David (Katy) she was responsible, on her own for much of the time, for our care and upbringing. When the ship’s captain returned, he found the home berth in ‘ship-shape and Bristol fashion’.
Mom sewed our clothes and costumes, assisted with school projects, led youth programs at church and attended, with a little less enthusiasm, our sporting events. She was our anchor in stormy seas.
Dad, on becoming a B.C. Coast Pilot moved the family to Vancouver Island in 1964. He was posted to the Victoria Pilot station. Upon settling in Victoria they both joined the Union Club of British Columbia where they were both Life Members.
As our family grew, Mom’s responsibilities for childcare diminished and she joined the Women’s Canadian Club of Victoria in 1970, rising to President from 1980 to 1982. She remained a member when the Men’s and Women’s clubs in Victoria combined. Her drive and enthusiasm for the club led to her election as President of the national Association of Canadian Clubs from 1993 to 1997 and became a Life Member of the Victoria Canadian Club.
Mom and her dearly beloved husband Dad, enjoyed cruising all around the world and celebrated their 63rd anniversary on a cruise in 2012, just weeks before Dad’s passing. Since then, Mom has carried on in her own indefatigable way believing that life was still ‘the best game in town’.
During the pandemic she wrote a book about her early life titled Cannery Girl, A Dorman Diary from Bones Bay that she dedicated ‘For my progeny…and theirs…and theirs’. In July 2022, she held a book launch party hosting 40 members of the Dorman family, all of whom received a copy of the book. She also donated a copy to several museums from Campbell River to Port Hardy B.C.
Mom relished her role as a loving and caring Nana to ten grandchildren Marian, Richard, William, Kaitlin, Sarah, Juliana, Adrian, Vincent, Victoria and Madeleine and great-grandmother (known as GG) to Abigail, Nolan, Atlas and Ben.
Her love and guidance over a long and accomplished life will be cherished by her entire family as we continue to rejoice that she was ours, in mind, body and spirit into her 95th year.
Words cannot fully express the gratitude we feel for the nurses and staff of VIHA Oak Bay / Gordon Head office who provided care and support over the past month. We are also most thankful to Rebecca and Stephen for their 24-hour care that allowed Mom to remain in her home until the end.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the Begbie Lounge at the Union Club of Victoria 805 Gordon Street on Saturday April 29, 2023, from 2:00 to 4:30 pm. Please use the Humboldt Street Entrance opposite Miniature World.
