Obituary
Bill Palm passed away surrounded by his family on July 28, 2022, at The Red Deer Hospice after a long battle with cancer.
William Stanley (Bill) Palm was born at Bentley Alberta on September 27,1937 to William Sr. and Irene Palm. He was the 7th of their 8 children and was raised NE of Eckville, until 1955 when his folks sold their Eckville place and bought a 1/2 section near Alhambra. He went to school at the Estonian School through grade 6 and Eckville Jr Sr High until Grade 12 when he finished the year driving from Alhambra every day.
His high school friends were lifelong buddies and as few of them that there were, they stayed more than in touch over the last many decades. They all danced at their 50th Class Reunion at one of the Canada Day Celebrations for the Town of Eckville.
Bill married his wife Ellen in 1959 and they were together until the very last moments of his life having spent over 63 years as husband and wife. They danced their way through ups and downs and were outstanding role models for their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Bill’s career was as a pipe fitter mostly and he went from starting with CR Frost Plumbing which was later sold to Crest Plumbing and Heating in 1963 where he finished his apprenticeship. He worked industrial gas plants and such until he decided to be closer to home in 1978 and start his own business. He helped many young people get their apprenticeship including Gregg. By this time their family was living on the west end of Sylvan Lake.
By 1989 he had decided to go back to work industrial and spent the better part of 10 years at the Caroline Shell plant. After that and after they sold their place at the lake, he went onto consulting all over Alberta, northern BC, and some in Saskatchewan. He worked mainly facilities but sometimes pipelines. He worked with many great people and made really good friends in the patch. Every time he said “this is the last time I’m getting these stupid tickets” we rolled our eyes and away he went. He officially retired at 75 and was in fantastic shape for a guy his age mentally and physically.
Work wasn’t all he was. He told so many stories about his family his folks and his siblings. He had very fond memories of his grandparent’s place at Palm Bay on the north end of Sylvan Lake. He had a photographic memory and remembered the birth years and ages of family members. He was an unlimited fountain of information for all of us although he always started with “I don’t know much about this but…. this is how I would do it” He taught by example how to live a good life.
His family was his whole life, and he loved his heritage and his people whether you were related or not. A notable European trip in 2005 was one of the highlights of his life and Bill and Ellen had an open-door policy at their home and often hosted relatives from overseas and countless dinners and coffees were had around their kitchen table.
He was pre-deceased by his parents, Bill, and Irene Palm. Brothers Harold, Leo, Jack, and Ron. Sisters Phyllis Erickson, Thelma Staniforth and Betty Shultz. Ellen’s parents Harold and Elsie Brattberg, brother-in-law Robert Brattberg and sister-in-law Ethel Brattberg.
Bill is survived by his wife Ellen of 63 years. His 3 children Jacqueline Palm- Fraser (Wayne), Sandra Hallgren, Gregg (Christine). 9 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Des Hallgren (Amy) Ava, Hailey, Tayiah, Letitia Dempster (Scott) George and Annika, Sandi-Rae Hebb and her girls Gracie and Mikki, Sara Hallgren and her kids Kennedy, Emily, and Ryder. Ty Hallgren (Mandy) Piper and Huxley. Jaleesa Grzech (Jay) Gemma and Scarlett. Nick Hallgren (Kate Sutherland), Ellyse Newton (Dave) Beau, Cole Palm (Tamara Bonderud)
Brothers-in-law Bill Staniforth, Jim Shultz, Elmer Brattberg (Audrey), sisters-in-law Ruth Palm and Marlene Brattberg. And many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbours who were very dear to him.
