HAUGEN, Violet Fay
1946 – 2022
Vi was born in Biggar, Saskatchewan; the first born of seven children to Reginald and Marjorie Charlton, arriving just before Christmas on December 23, 1946. Vi would remain in Saskatchewan until she and Frank Keats, her first husband, along with their three children made the move to Alberta. Her first marriage ended and she married her second husband, Martin Haugen, in 1971. Martin and Vi also had three children. Throughout her life Vi moved as the opportunity to work determined and each new place brought new learning opportunities. Through these experiences Vi learned to be extremely independent. Some of the children attest that she is the only woman they know that could run any kind of power tool! If something was broken, Vi fixed it! History proves that she wasn’t afraid to try as she built her own 1500 sq ft fence with a gate, all by herself! She had a wonderful sense of get-up-and-go, right until the very end.
Vi was a stickler for having a clean yard and home. The cleanliness was of such importance to her that if the neighbours grass was too long for her liking she would go give it a cut! She was also seen stopping to clean the weeds out of flower beds on her way home from the grocery store! Vi was a kind and generous person, if someone needed help she would do her best to help them. Vi enjoyed having people pop-in to the house and was always ready to host a coffee break. She was a very loving person who would give you the shirt off her back if she felt you needed it more than she did. She lived a tough life but always did the very best with what she had.
After a long battle with her health, Violet Fay Haugen passed away on Monday, January 3, 2022 after a short stay at Red Deer Regional Hospital. Vi was 75 years of age. She will be dearly missed. Violet is survived by three daughters, Faye (Ian) Townsend of Surrey, B.C., Shelley Haugen of Red Deer, AB, and Amanda (Shawn) Wadstein of Stettler, AB; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four brothers, Darryl (Nancy) Charlton of Wildwood, AB, Fred (Sandy) Charlton of Wildwood, AB, Mike (Cathy) Charlton of Morrin, AB, and Mark (Carol) Charlton of Tilley, AB; two sisters, Susan Charlton, AB, and Sandy Charlton, Hanna, AB; as well as friends and neighbours. Violet was predeceased by her daughter, Angela Haugen; son, John Keats; and grandson, Bobby Keats.
A private family service will be held at Brooks Cemetery, Brooks, Alberta where Violet will be interred alongside her daughter, Angela and son, John.
