Obituary
With sadness, we announce the passing of Terrance (Terry) Allan Wiens of Calgary, AB on December 30, 2022.
Terry was predeceased by his parents, Pearl (Smith) and Jacob Wiens. He is survived by his son, Sean, and grandson, Taylor of Nanaimo, BC; and by his siblings Ken, Judy, Brian, Don, and Heather and their families.
Terry was born May 31, 1950, in McCreary, MB, and contracted poliomyelitis at age three during the Winnipeg epidemic. He spent years in the Alberta Children’s Hospital after his family moved to Calgary.
Terry was the 1955 March of Dimes “Timmy”, played wheelchair basketball at the 1973 National Wheelchair Games, travelled across Canada as a young man, and led a full life. He loved a good political discussion, watching movies, music, new technology, cooking, and a wheel around the neighborhood on a sunny day.
The focus and passion of Terry’s life and work was advocacy for persons with disabilities. In his lifetime there were huge advances in disability rights and services, adaptive technology, infrastructure changes, and knowledge of the treatment and care of those with disabilities. He was involved in that progress and still pushed for more recognition of the issues and of post-polio syndrome until his death.
Thank you to Dr. Martina Kelly and the physicians and staff of Unit 62 of Foothills Medical Centre and the MAID service for their care during Terry’s final weeks.
Memorial and interment plans will be announced later. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to any organization assisting those with physical, developmental, or mental health disabilities, such as Spinal cord injury research in Alberta (scialberta.ca).
