Atkinson, Sir Chesley Herald – 103, Pugwash, passed away peacefully in the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst, November 9, 2022. Born in Pugwash, he was a son of the late Harold and Blanche (Laird) Atkinson. Ches was a WWII veteran who returned home to Pugwash following the war. He took a mechanical course in Halifax and then worked for Ainslie MacLeod, whom he often spoke of and enjoyed working for. Later he worked for A.E. Mundle and Company and then Quigley Pulpwood for 19 years. He bought pulpwood thru out Cumberland and Colchester Counties and was well known by farmers and woodlot owners alike. Ches was also the Wharfinger at Pugwash for 43 years. His last 12 working years were at the Pugwash and District High School where he did maintenance and janitorial duties. He was predeceased by his wife Gladys (VanBuskirk), son Darrell and step-daughter Brenda (Montrose); brothers, Bill and Norman; sisters, Margaret, Jean, Goldie, Eileen, Alouise, Jessie and Shirley; Ches is survived by his son Rod (Carolyn), Summerside, PEI; grandchildren, Craig Atkinson (Debra), PEI, Chad Atkinson, PEI, Kerry-Lynn Atkinson (Jeff), PEI, Alicia Gobine (Terrance), Ont., Mark Atkinson (Susan), BC, Christopher Atkinson, BC, Holly Schiffner (Mark), Ont., Angela Gregan (Robert), Gulf Shore, Brad Montrose (Mary), NS; son-in-law, Vernon Montrose, NS; also survived by many great and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Donations in memory may be made to Wesley St. Matthew United Church, the Royal Canadian Legion, Peace Branch 60, the Pugwash and District Volunteer Fire Department or the charity of one’s choice.
