Obituary
RUSSELL JOSEPH FRASER
AGE 73, FLORENCE
It is with broken hearts that we announce sudden the passing of Russell Joseph Fraser, age 73 of Florence, Cape Breton.
Russ passed peacefully in the Halifax Infirmary with family by his side on Sunday, December 11, 2022.
He was born to Russell and Teresa (Broderick) Fraser in Millcreek on March 5, 1949. The family later moved to Alder Point where he grew up.
Russ worked various jobs over the years. He lived in Ontario for many years and returned to Cape Breton the home of his heart. He was a member of the Seafarers’ int’l Union and LIUNA Local 92, Alberta, worked on the Confederation Bridge to PEI, was on Tug Boats in the Baffin Islands, and spent many years on the water in the local fishing industry. Among his accomplishments, Russ obtained his 60-ton Captain’s papers and taught the Pleasure Craft Boater’s Course to many people. He enjoyed being at the wharf in Alder Point to help his nieces and nephews prepare for the upcoming lobster season.
His favorite pastime was fishing, whether it was ice fishing, trout fishing or eeling with his Uncle Pete Mansfield, and of course, he always caught the biggest and the best. He always shared his catch so that a good meal could be enjoyed, of course, his secret location was never shared. He passed on this knowledge to his nephews and nieces which brought him great pride and joy.
Russ is survived by his partner, Eliza Rudderham, who will miss him dearly. He is also survived by two sons, Peter Swan, Point Aconi, and Troy Fraser, St. Catharines, ON, his brothers James, Sydney Mines, Floyd (Mary), Georges River, Peter (Cindy), Keremeos, BC, Gratten “Duke” (Treva), Georges River, Al (Velda) Alder Point, Sisters, Mary Marsh, Alder Point, Robena Strickland, North Sydney, Lois Leblanc, Guelph, ON, Jackie, Sydney Mines, and Florence, Sydney Mines, and brother In law Nigel Holbeche, Orillia, ON, sister in law, Joanne Putnam, St. Catharines, ON, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends that he admired and teased almost daily. He also leaves behind his best pal Brownie that was always by his side.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Raymond and Paul and sister Theresa Holbeche, niece Amanda Fraser, as well as brothers-in-law, Stanley Marsh, Jim Strickland, and Winston LeBlanc, and his best friend and fishing buddy Danny Serroul whom he missed dearly.
We would like to thank the emergency staff, doctors, and nurses at both the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and Halifax Infirmary 5.2 for their care and compassion and for going above and beyond to do their best for Russ. Also thank you to EHS and Life-Flight Services.
There will be a visitation at Jobes Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 21, from 2-4 pm with a service following at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers please make a donation to your local Hospital Foundation or a charity of one’s choice. Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
