Obituary
Roger Tobin “Coke”
Alder Point
It is with tremendous sadness and broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Roger Gregory Tobin, beloved husband, father, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend, on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 at the age of 57.
Born in North Sydney on March 14, 1965, Roger was the son of the late Gerard and Millie (Young) Tobin and grew up on Tobin Avenue. Roger was always a tireless worker. He worked many different jobs in his life, as a young boy picking blueberries, mowing lawns and as a dispatch operator for Blue & White Taxi. As a young man he was a processor at National Sea and Bluenose Fisheries. Later in life he worked with L.I.U.N.A. Local 92 in Fort McMurray. However, much of Roger’s working life was spent at sea or on the lake boats in the Great Lakes with Seafarers’ International Union of Canada and for the last 12 years as an Engine Room Assistant with Marine Atlantic.
Roger was a very social person who made long lasting friendships easily. He was well known as goaltender on the Northside and also played on the Southshore (Clare, Nova Scotia). He played with countless teams and found plenty of friends and stories along the way. He loved music, was quick to show off his dance moves, loved to hike with others and never alone because the dogs would always be in tow. He enjoyed taking the boat out, side-by-side treks and was a motorcycle enthusiast. He enjoyed a ride whenever he could and on Christmas day he’d ride through town as Santa. He never stopped at home, always fixing up and improving things; he had a knack at finding great deals while shopping and always brought home a bouquet of flowers.
He was a considerate and selfless man, putting the needs of others ahead of his own. He enjoyed spending time with his daughter when she visited, his nieces, grandnieces and his neighbours very often and with old friends and family whenever there was a chance. Of course, he enjoyed to spent time with the love of his life Theresa. Whether it was working out at home/gym/cross fit together, camping/beaching together, visiting/travelling together or more simply the time spent walking the dog and evening suppers. They cherished their time together.
Our handsome Roger had a personality bigger than life, a heart of gold, and a gentle soul; our world was a better place because of him. Left to mourn is his partner of 37 years, Theresa Devoe, and their daughter Jolene Devoe (Joey MacInyre) AB; his sister Cindy Tobin (Ron Delaney) Sydney; sisters-in-law Mary MacLellan North Sydney and Sharon Ryan, Alder Point; brother-in-law
David MacLellan (Tracy) BC; father-in-Law Ken Grady ON; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins and even more friends.
Besides his parents, Roger was predeceased by his brother Ricky and his sister Michelle Tobin; his step mother Valda Nugent; in-laws Millie and Dave MacLellan; brothers-in-law Danny (Isabell) Serroul, Joe MacLellan, and Art O’Quinn; nephew Daniel Serroul, along with many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A visitation for Roger will be held between 2 and 4p.m. on Thursday, November 3, with a funeral service immediately following at 4p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home Chapel at 107 Pleasant St. North Sydney with Deacon Dave Lewis officiating. A reception will follow the service in the Alder Point Community Center and all are welcome to attend. Online condolences may be left for the family by posting on the tribute wall of the obituary page at www.wjdooley.com.
