Robert Lymburner Saturday November 26th 2022

Louis Robert André Dextras (dit Bézier) Lymburner (aka L. Robert Lymburner or, to some former students, Lord Robert Lymburner) died peacefully at home on November 26, 2022 at the age of 78. He enjoyed a final puff on his pipe and died in the company and care of his family. Robert leaves behind his wonderful wife of 55 years, Delphine, his four loving daughters (Catherine, Jocelyn, Margaret, and Maureen (Nassim)), and his six grandchildren – Steven, Issa, Bayan, Manou, William, and Madeleine.
Robert was born on November 21, 1944 in Montreal to Elsie (née Stedman) and Louis Marcel Lymburner. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Louis. Robert completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Prince Edward Island (Saint Dunstan’s) – where he initially met Delphine – and later completed a Masters in Theology at St. Michael’s College. Robert was fortunate enough to marry Delphine in 1967 after the couple became reacquainted in Montreal (and was, thankfully, forgiven for his Stefan Anonymous prank!). Adventurous and young, they decided to move to Newfoundland – initially to Terrenceville and then Marystown where they raised four daughters in an old salt box home at the bottom of the bay.
Robert’s life revolved around education, either as a religion teacher in high school or as a student. Those who knew Robert will remember him as the consummate educator and consumer of knowledge. His intellectual curiosity knew absolutely no bounds, spanning from linguistics to quantum physics and including such esoteric topics as the study of cheese and Biblical Hebrew! Just weeks before his death, he decided to take another engineering course, knowing he wouldn’t have time to complete it. Robert was “Google” long before the internet existed and continued, throughout his life, to be the go-to for absolutely any question one might have, never failing to provide a thorough, nuanced, contextualized response that often went on for hours (or pages)!
For Robert, absolutely everyone (himself included) was a student and he assumed that we all have the capacity and desire to learn. Over the past few weeks, Robert received many messages from those he had impacted through his life and teaching. People shared how Robert had instilled his love of learning in them, they wrote of his passion for liberation theology and Christology as taught in The Jesus Book, and they wrote of the profound ways he had impacted their lives. As one writer noted, “Teachers are pretty magical that way: They get carried to the furthest reaches of the world through their students.”
Robert was deeply involved in his community, volunteering with the Lions Club from 1975 until just a few days before his death, at which time he reluctantly handed over the reins. He also played a lead role with Targa Newfoundland and he was elected to the Chamber of Commerce in 2009 where, for 10 years, he was “one of the girls.” In his free time, Robert was absolutely never without a book. He was also a skilled woodworker who could patiently spend days, weeks, and, let’s face it, sometimes years, finishing a piece to perfection.
As a father and husband, Robert was a knowledge provider, a handy man, an entertainer, a lover of classical music, a saver of dental floss, a librarian, a tour guide, a memory holder, a maestro, a calligrapher, a crow whisperer, a wearer of ascots, a fierce advocate for proper spelling/grammar, and a man with firm convictions! We will all sorely miss this most incredible and eccentric man and we can only hope that, wherever you are Robert, you have a pound of butter, a book, your music, a pipe, and that the toilet paper roll is hung the right way.
In honoring his wishes, cremation will take place.
The Lymburner Family will be accepting visitors at Wiseman’s Funeral Homes, Marystown on a date and time to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Home Again Furniture Bank (www.homeagainfb.ca) or your favourite charity would be appreciated.
