Richard Gaudreau lived a passionate, determined life, highly respected and loved by family, friends and colleagues.
Born Hull, Quebec. Survived by wife Allyson Nelson, sister Suzanne Davey, and many cousins, nephews and nieces. Nephew Luc Bordeleau (Christina Hagberg), his Vancouver-based family, provided invaluable assistance. Affectionately “Crazy Uncle Richard” to their twins Victoria and Danielle. Predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Isabelle (Blackburn) Gaudreau and brothers Andre and Robert.
Known by many as “that one-eyed old goat” he became blind in one eye at age 3. It was never a handicap, although some “institutions” thought it was.
Highly intelligent, incredibly social, up for any sport or adventure, well-travelled, stubborn and opinionated, with a great sense of humour. An astute follower of current events who loved newspapers, especially the cartoons. An avid reader.
Never satisfied with just one career, over his lifetime Richard was a surveyor (including the James Bay Energy Project in northern Quebec), ski instructor (Mt. Gabriel), Mountain Safety volunteer (Whistler Blackcomb) and corporate travel agent (Navigant, Ryder, Atlas Travel and Carlson Wagonlit). In retirement he thoroughly enjoyed warm winters golfing and having friends visit at Piper’s Landing Yacht and Country Club in Florida.
Always willing to share his time and wisdom, he was a long-time member of several organizations, including the Kinsmen, the Pacific Ski Club and served on several boards including the Francophone Cultural Association of Vancouver.
Special thanks for so much care at St. Paul’s Hospital and the extraordinary compassion of all staff at St. John Hospice at UBC. Cremation has occurred. At his request, Richard’s life will be celebrated with a party in his honour (after the current BC Liquor strike is settled!). Memorial donations to either Francophone Cultural Centre Vancouver or the Kinsmen Rehabilitation Foundation of BC.
He was such a gentle, loving, unique man. Au revoir mon mari special.
