Obituary
“She saved my life,” says Jim Bayes of his wife of 62 years.
Patricia Anne Bayes (nee Miller) passed away, peacefully, in Southampton Hospital, on October 4, 2022. She is survived by her husband, her daughters Lori Bayes and Teri Sullivan (Dave), granddaughters Jodi Pullman (Jake Roote), and Lexie Pullman (Andrew Myhal). Predeceased by her sister Joan and special friends Lois and Bob. Pat’s extended family includes friends, neighbours, and relatives.
Pat was born on August 18, 1935 in downtown Toronto. In 1957, as a fiercely independent young woman, she was introduced to a ‘guy with a hot convertible’ with whom she spent the rest of her life. Jim and Pat married in 1960, moved to the small town of Deep River, developed lifelong friendships, and started a family. In 1967, with the nuclear energy industry growing, Pat and Jim moved to Port Elgin, bought a house ‘on the street with the trees’, and have lived there together ever since. Home was a vibrant, caring, and safe place where Pat helped raise her daughters with a love and pride that was later shared with her two granddaughters. Their daughters’ friends were welcomed and treated as family at the drop of a hat.
Over the years, Pat took great pleasure in helping neighbours, even if just to pass on a great new book or a pretty perennial, and visiting friends in need. She took pleasure from the simple things in life; gardening, watching the birds, reading, trying new bake shops, following football, winning at solitaire, counting school buses, or just simply watching the world go by her front window. From the beginning, until the end, through life’s ups and downs, fun times and sad, Pat provided the foundation and roots upon which Jim and Pat would lead their life, in love, together.
The Bayes family is eternally grateful for the care and kindness provided by friends and the staff at both the Southampton and Stratford hospitals. These wonderful people helped make a difficult time easier.
In keeping with Jim and Pat’s love of friendly chats, friends are welcomed and encouraged to call or drop in to visit Jim at his home. A gathering to celebrate Pat’s life is not planned at this time
