Predeceased in 2018 by his wife of 66 years, Marie (née Tonkin).
Survived by his children Lisa, Mitch, Andria, Daina, and Tony, as well as grandchildren Bridgett, Navona, Siena, Charlotte, Clayton, Melina, Cobee, and Sovai.
The son of Irish and Italian immigrants, he was the youngest of six. He never made it to high school (except as a janitor), but he attended classes and obtained his 2nd class engineering ticket. He sold his car to buy a baby buggy when his first child was born, and rode his bicycle to work. He always stood up for those who needed help, opening his door to stray dogs and people. Hired as a maintenance supervisor at Macassa Lodge, he turned a working man’s gig into a shirt-and-tie job, with an office, a budget, and a seat at the table with city leaders.
He was an artist – singing and playing guitar and harmonica, creating beautiful paintings in acrylic and oil, and writing songs and poetry (along with numerous letters to the editor).
He built a mobile, free-standing ladder, The Mighty Machine, that reached 33 feet into the air, and a crane for his garage. He could weld, pipe fit, wire a house, or sand floors. We knew we could count on him if our furnace stopped working or our basement flooded.
Dad remained vigorous, curious, and perceptive until right before his death, despite having borne mesothelioma for 12 years. Instead, it was an infection that felled him, like the heel of Achilles.
We will miss him forever.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held in the summer, when we can enjoy a bonfire in his honour.
