“Wherever a beautiful soul has been, there is a trail of beautiful memories”
Author Unknown
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother and friend (Mary) Irene Waddleton (nee Tobin), of Trepassey, aged 94 years on Saturday, January 29th, 2022 at St. Patrick’s Mercy home, St. John’s, with the love of her family surrounding her.
She will be lovingly remembered and missed beyond measure by her nine children; sons Clarence (Sheila), Des (Blanche), Marvin, Terry (Eileen), Kenneth (Sheila), Ray, Randy (Denise), Scott (Joanne), daughter Donna (Brian Power); grandchildren Vicki (Rodney), Guy (TerrLynn), Gail, Leigh Ann (Darrell), Deena (Gary), Renee (Keith), Kent (Allison), Lynn (Jeff), Brad, Michelle (Dean), Yvonne, Paul (Jill), Marsha (Stephen), Terri Lynn (Tommy), Ryan (Emily), Kendra (Jonathon), Justin (Maria), Jeremy (Stephanie), Rachel (Phil), and Albert; 24 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; special friends Lucella James, Marie and Leo Quilty formerly of Placentia, and a large circle of friends from Trepassey to the Middle East, across the country and around the world; she has touched the hearts of all who knew her.
She was predeceased by her loving and devoted husband of 54 years Albert, her parents William and Josephine (nee James) Tobin, sister Theresa (Ray Evens), brothers George (Eileen Finlay), Jeremiah (Magdelan O’Neill), granddaughter Paula, in-laws Cyril (Rita Sutton), Reginald (Blanche Sutton), Tom (Nett Fitzgerald), Mike (Ita Fitzgerald) and special friend Philomena Sutton.
Formerly of Daniels Point, Trepassey, she forged her family home together with her husband Albert across the harbor on the grassy banks. From the view from her window she would often look across the harbour to the life she once knew and was eternally grateful for all her life’s blessings.
She lived through much progress in her life, from indoor plumbing, to a telephone, to electricity to the internet; all great marvels for a modest woman who was devoted to just making a loving home for her family. Making sure during a time when luxuries were few, that there was always a meal to be served, clothing to wear and a polite word to share. Generous, loving and oh so kind, she had a smile that would melt the toughest of hearts.
A career homemaker, full of wit and humour, she also taught school for a brief time, but was most notably known for being an amazing wife, mother, grandmother (nan), great grandmother, and most importantly, a friend. Her confidence was a vault and the relationships she had with her family and all who knew her were sacred. We fondly recall all the games of 120’s in years past, as well as the countless Christmas parties where you would have to keep your eye out for a chair and be quick to grab it before it was gone. Music, singing, playing of instruments, sharing stories and a drink or two, all combined to provide us with the most treasured memories. Whether it was trips to St. John’s, Port aux Choix or New Jersey, she was game for anything. She was truly an amazing human being. She had an enormous aptitude for reading and puzzles, and am sure if you asked her about any book, she would probably have read it. It must be shared that she had excellent penmanship, and was known to write a story or two in her day, while some excerpts still remain for us to reflect upon. There was the countless chasing of children, tending to scraped knees, knitting of socks, mittens, sweaters and hats, tree ornaments, sewing of clothes, quilts and curtains and the cooking of her famous Sunday dinner with ‘extra’ cabbage for the infamous cabbage and mustard sandwich to be had on Monday. As you can gather, idle was not in her vocabulary.
Mother, Mudder, Irene or nan, you will always be irreplaceable. We will miss you today, tomorrow and always, forever.
