Marjorie Mae Zappe of Thunder Bay passed away peacefully at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital on Tuesday, July 12, 2022. Marjorie was born on April 8, 1934, in Bengough, Saskatchewan to parents Doris and Victor Wightman. Marjorie graduated high school as Salutatorian and enrolled at the Manitoba Teacher’s College in Winnipeg, graduating in 1954. She taught at elementary schools in Thompson, Flin Flon, and Winnipeg, MB for five years before marrying Hubert Zappe in 1959. Marjorie and Hubert moved from Winnipeg to Thunder Bay, Ontario in 1960, where they lived and raised their six children in the same home for over 50 years. She was a devoted parishioner at St. Agnes Catholic Church.
Marjorie and family will be forever grateful to Mrs. Andrea Boyd, her speech therapist, Mr. Mike Poling, her physical therapist and to Arin Bowes and Tricia Gunn, her caregivers for many years.
Marjorie is survived by her three sons and their spouses, Erich and Marie Claude of Gatineau, Quebec, Dion and Theresa Zappe of Andover, New Jersey, and Chris and Martha Zappe of Shuniah, ON, and her three daughters and their spouses, Denise and Chrigu Buhler of Sigriswil, Switzerland, Leni and Douglas Dewey of Stamford, Connecticut, and Gina and Daniel Saurer of Ottawa, ON. She is also survived by 32 grandchildren (Brielle, Sonny, Jackie, Yvonne, Frances, Dean, George, Maximillian, Monica, Jackson, Doris, Jane, Vera, Brogan, Isaac, Thomas, John Peter, Mary, David, Justin, Lillian, Clara, Virginia, Leo, Johann, Connor, Matthew, Neil, Charlotte, Beatrice, Wolfram and Thorben) and 12 great grandchildren (Juna, Jari, Nora, Till, Dean, Achilles, Helena, Emily, Karol, John Hubert, Athanasius and Benjamin).
Marjorie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Hubert (1925-1990), parents Victor (1899-1983) and Doris (1898-1960) Wightman, her brother Douglas Wightman (1924-1972), and her sister Vera Johnston (1922-2004).
The funeral Mass was held on Friday, July 15 at Our Lady of Loretto Church in Thunder Bay and was celebrated by Rev. Francis Pudicherry. Marjorie will be buried at Mountain View Cemetery at a private ceremony.
