FULTON, Marion Doreen, Age 86, Otter Brook, died in the early hours of July 8, 2022, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro as a result of complications of heart failure.
Born and raised in Crowe’s Mills, Marion was the second of nine children of the late Sidney Higgins, and along with her older sister, helped raise her younger siblings. They were a very close family and she often recalled fond memories of her childhood. Annual Higgins Family Christmas parties with live music and great food were always a highlight of her year for the duration of her life. As a young adult, Marion worked at Stanfield’s and loved going to the local dances, where she met her husband of 51 years, Franklyn Fulton.
They moved to Otter Brook and began their lives together on his family farm.
A devoted wife and mother, Marion would do anything for her family – from driving her children to endless 4-H events and band practices on a daily basis, to helping as needed on the farm when no one else was able – even as a (reluctant) restrainer of piglets for castration – a job that she quickly passed on to her son as soon as possible!
Her grandchildren meant the absolute world to her, and she could magically fix their hurts with a homemade cookie or purple popsicle. Her kitchen was never short on delicious baked goods and at family dinners the question was never, “Are you having dessert?” but rather, “What will you be having for dessert?” and you were to choose from a list of her homemade pies.
Marion is survived by her son, Jeff (Angela); daughter, Marla MacKay; grandchildren, Carl, Hayley, Owen, and John; sisters, Lois Brownell, Sylvia Hingley, Goldie (Muir) Murdock, Beverly Hingley and Sharon (Marc) Miron; brothers, Lyman (Helen) and Curtis (Bette) and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her father, she was predeceased by her husband, Franklyn and brother, Lawrence.
The family would like to express our extreme gratitude to the VON Home Care providers and nurses, Ferne MacKenzie, Michaela Benvie, the nurses of the D3 ward and IMCU, Drs. Singh, Coad, Locke, and Nicholson. Your compassion shown to mom will never be forgotten – you are all very special people. Thanks to David Parks for ensuring mom got her morning coffee and donut and your kindness shown to her with your visits. We also want to extend our gratitude to the Upper Stewiacke Volunteer Fire Department for having been there at a moment’s notice to help our parents over the years.
Donations in Marion’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Cremation has taken place. As per her wishes, no service will be held. Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS. Online condolences are available at www.ColchesterCommunity.com
