Died suddenly on Sunday December 18, 2022 at North York General Hospital after a brief illness. Predeceased by her parents Margarethe and Alfred, she Is survived by her devoted partner of 36 years Robin Rowat; her son Christopher (Lisa); her sisters Christina and Barbara; daughter-in-law Debbie (George) and son-in-law Tony (Lee); grandchildren Mercer, Alex (Angeli), and Dylan; and nieces Krista (Matthew), Lori (Matthew), Ashley (Justin), and Angela (Johar) and great-nephew Harrison. And her many and varied and lovely friends.
Born in Vienna in 1936, she lived in Berlin and Salzburg during the war, before emigrating to Winnipeg in 1952. As a high school student, clerk, lifeguard, swim teacher, furniture and craft retailer, and ultimately jeweller – Margarite brought her continental verve (and unflinching eye for detail) to everything she did. Always in the centre of a vibrant social and artistic circle, she connected people throughout her life.
Margarite embodied the moniker “bon vivant,” bringing enthusiasm and a smile to all of her endeavours. The vacuum she leaves will be keenly felt.
The family is planning a memorial / fête in January to celebrate her life.
In lieu of flowers, please consider giving to the Scott Mission, Yonge Street Mission, the Red Cross, or any organization helping people struggling under economic or wartime hardship.
