Upon her long-awaited return to Cape Breton from Halifax last month, Mom raised her hands to the heavens and joyfully declared, “I’m home”.
Far too soon after that triumphant moment, we are heartbroken to announce her peaceful death at St. Martha’s in Antigonish on December 2, as loving words from all four of her children echoed in her mind.
Born in Troy, Peggy was the daughter of the late Hughie Jim and Margaret MacIsaac of Troy. Mom is survived by her son Gary (Wolfville), and daughters Stacy (Ray), Mount Uniacke; Peggy (Andrew), Halifax and Moira (Jose), Port Hawkesbury. Also left to grieve are her beloved grandchildren Jonah and Rory, along with Maxden, Jayden, Julianna and Annalise.
Mom was predeceased by her parents and all of her siblings: Hughie (Anne), Gilbert (Pat) and Louise, all of Troy, and Allan Joseph at birth. She was also predeceased by her ex-husband and father of her children, Donnie (Port Hastings).
Mom was shy but within the family and group of close friends, her kindness, humour and love of storytelling shone through. She was also extremely stubborn, a trait that allowed her to keep going for many years following her first health setback.
Her home in Troy was a popular gathering place for family, friends and neighbours, as much for her colourful, up-to-the-minute weather reports, as for her easy laugh and bottomless teapot.
Living in Halifax, Mom picked up ‘the Facebook’ and kept herself in the loop with all the goings-on, often picking up the phone to share important updates. Her random requests, also delivered via telephone, will be greatly missed.
She loved the news, Coronation Street, horror movies, and the endless bounty of meal possibilities that were at her fingertips via Skip the Dishes, which had not been available to her on Route 19.
Funeral service will take place Friday, December 9 at 11am at Stella Maris Parish in Creignish with Rev. Barrett Clare-Johnson officiating. A tea will be held at the Creignish Recreational Centre following the service.
The family would like to thank Debbie, Flora, Sherri and the rest of the staff at Precision Health in Halifax, the staff at Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home (where Peggy enjoyed dining and laughing with friends old and new), along with the kindness of Dr. Howard, Sister Catherine and the nurses on the third floor at St. Martha’s. Donations in Peggy’s memory may be made to Heart & Stroke Canada.
