Malcolm Neal Miller died Wednesday morning in intensive care, at the Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton, September 21, 2022. Born on October 13, 1939 in Black Rock, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Herman and Gladys Miller (née Brewster).
Malcolm was very kind, loving and generous. He was a passionate educator and a lifelong student, open to new ideas and endless curiosity throughout his life. Teaching was his profession and his way of being in the world. He obtained a B.Sc. at McGill in 1963, M.Ed. from UNB in 1986 and Ph.D. from Nottingham in philosophy of education in 1996. After obtaining his Ph.D., he became a part-time instructor in statistics for the Sociology Department at St. Thomas University.
Malcolm loved philosophy, theatre and music, and enjoyed sharing these joys with others. During his twenty-some years teaching in Cambridge Narrows Community School, he led the drama program and directed plays for the annual student drama festival. In his later years, Malcolm continued producing plays for the Stepping Stone Senior Centre, using the reader’s theatre method, which allowed persons of all acting abilities to participate to their fullest potential and experience the joy of acting. He also taught himself to play the harmonica, and shared this with other retirees. Malcolm was also a passionate dog lover.
Malcolm is survived by his wife of 30 years, Sylvia Hale; former wife, Haifa Miller (née Zakaib); children, Katherine Miller, John Miller (Lisa Jean Lewis), and Sara Miller; grandchildren, Samuel Titus (Rebecca Kingston) and Griffin Miller as well as many cousins, friends, and extended family, and pets Tessie and WusWus.
In addition to his parents, Malcolm was predeceased by his sister, Hazel McClare and her husband, Warren, and brother, Murdoch Miller.
A celebration of Malcolm’s life will be held on Monday, October 3, 2022 at 11 AM in the J. A. McAdam Memorial Chapel, 160 York St., Fredericton. Rev. Mary Tingley will officiate.
