Lyle Dalton Kenwell 2022

LYLE DALTON KENWELL was born September 28, 1939, in the midst of thrashing season on his
grandparent’s farm near Singhampton. When the men came in for supper, they were told a
new man just arrived to help. From that day on he never forgot it.
Lyle could be seen at daybreak cutting wood, after he got someone to start his chainsaw. He
couldn’t start the saw himself after losing two of his fingers at the age of 80 running the wood
processor, but that never slowed him down. He enjoyed going on his side by side rides each
night with his wife Marie – checking his cattle and crop. He was most proud of his corn crop
this year and was looking forward to the harvest.
Poppa was proudest of his family – all living just up the road from him including grandchildren
and great-grandchildren. When needed they would be down in a couple of minutes to help.
They learnt this from Poppa who was always first on the scene when anyone needed help. Lyle
would tell you a few stories where he had beat the fire trucks and had already started blowing
snow to put the fire out. Family visits were an everyday occurrence and Poppa was happy to
put down his saw and head into the family rec room to enjoy the company.
Lyle attended Springview school excelling in geography and organizing the school baseball
team. Lawrence Lindsey was his favourite teacher, and they remained good friends. Even
though farming was a 24/7 job Lyle found the time to play baseball and broomball for both
Singhampton and Duntroon teams.
Lyle met his Sweet Marie at a Duntroon Hall dance in 1958 and proposed on Valentines Day
1961. They would celebrate their 25th and 45th wedding anniversary at the very hall where they
first met, and recently celebrated their 60th with a party at the shop. Lyle would be the first to
tell you they were a hardworking team. Following their honeymoon, they came home and
began building their homestead. They would go on to buy several nearby farms that their kids
now own. For five years Lyle worked for Ken Winters trucking, and they became lifelong
friends. In 1970 Lyle and Marie opened Kenwell’s General Store in Singhampton. Lyle was
particularly fond of the ice cream freezer which Marie frequently reminded him were for paying
customers. Their next business venture was opening a summer camp at the farm teaching up
to eighteen city kids (plus their own) the farming ways.
But it wasn’t all work, Lyle loved to travel. At seventeen years old he took the train west with
Raymond Marsden and worked in Alberta and Saskatchewan. He travelled most of North
America with Marie, her parents Bill and Alice Lockhart and their dear friends Doug and Irene
McQueen. Closer to home Lyle loved attending community dances, beef dinners, and taking
drives with his family in the countryside. The humble family of six were notoriously known for
week-long monopoly games taking brakes to tend to farm work. Lyle was also an avid card
player. He enjoyed euchre every Wednesday night in Badjeros and every night we could get
him to sit at the table long enough, the family would have a game of bid or rummy. Lyle’s hard
work and determination will live on as Marie carries on the business with the help of the family.
Our dear Lyle passed away on September 9, 2022, at home. Lyle leaves behind his Sweet Marie
of 61 years and his four children Gina (Doug), Monica (Billy), Lonnie (Sherri), and Jesse (Sue).
Forever loved Poppa to Rebecca, Dallas (Emma), Dawsen, Curtis (Jenna), Nicole, Bailey (Mark),
Taylor, Nelson (Taylor). Great Poppa to Dakota, Mason, Liam, Nash, Zeke, Aurora, and Blair. He
will be remembered as the oldest of twelve siblings; Ed (Linda predeceased), Isabel (Peter), Lois
(Henry), Helen Mae (Carl predeceased), Wesley (Wendy), and Wilfred (Shelley). Predeceased
by his brothers Russell, Garnet, and Harry.
Family and friends are invited to a come and go celebration of Lyle’s life on Saturday October 1,
2022, at the shop between 2 to 6 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Rob Roy United
Church would be appreciated by the family. Arrangements entrusted to Chatterson Funeral Home, 404 Hurontario Street, Collingwood. To sign Lyle’s Book of Memories, please visit www.chattersonfuneralhome.com
