Obituary For Lorraine Peters
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dearest Lorraine – loving wife, mother, grandmother & great-grandmother, daughter, sister, auntie, cousin & friend – after her extraordinary 74 years and 10 month battle with cancer.
Lorraine is survived by her loving family – husband Jeff, son Jason & Shaughnessy, grandsons Kelson & Cooper and daughter Tina & Dennis, grandson Gregory, granddaughter Julianna, grandson Jordan & Julaea and great-granddaughter Rowena. She was predeceased by her parents Leonard & Violet Nordlund and brother Everard.
Lorraine was born into a Scandinavian family and raised on a farm near Rich Valley, Alberta. Here she learned the fundamental values that carried her throughout her life, of kindness, hard work, determination, integrity & perseverance. She graduated from Rich Valley School where she played competitive sports, excelled in her classes and had her relationship with Jeff begin to blossom. Soon after they decided to get married and move north to Grande Prairie to find work, make a home and start a family. She happened upon an Office Administrator job that set the tone for the majority of her professional career, for a handful of employers, up until her retirement. The job was what she knew and did very well at, but her joy in doing so, came from the special people she worked with. A few short years later, Tina came along and then a few more and Jason arrived to complete the family of 4. They grew together on an acreage on the Emerson Trail then later, moved to an acreage in the Town of smith.
Coming from a well-rounded background where her parents grew, preserved, raised or hunted & foraged all their own food and spending some quality time learning tips from her mother-in-law who came from a long line of English gardeners, Lorraine naturally had the greenest of thumbs too. She continued the traditions that she could, passing along the love of gardening, fishing, camping & hunting to her children and grandchildren. She even managed to somehow spend this last summer with her hands in the soil planting her bountiful vegetable gardens and tending her beautiful flowers, all while undergoing chemotherapy treatments and having a full hysterectomy surgery.
Any time you would visit, a bag of vegetables or jar of pickles went home with you. But that was Lorraine… our sweet, quiet, unpretentious Lorraine. She always made sure that everyone was well fed (with the many mouth-watering meals she’d make from scratch) and knew that they were loved lots (even if she’d just skunked you in a game of crib or handed it to you in a friendly game of bean bag!)
She gave us all an unforgettably delicious feast at Thanksgiving! She made it look effortless to do such a wonderful thing for her family, while donning her most genuine, beautiful smile. It was magical. Then, only a few short weeks later, the cancer came with such force that her little body could not battle any more. Regardless, she lived her best life showing each of us how to live & love & carry on.
Lorraine was so grateful to all the family & friends who came to see her and was so thankful for all of her angelic caregivers throughout these past 10 months especially. She left this world peacefully in hospice, surrounded by her husband & children and all the love she’d ever poured out in her lifetime.
A Celebration of Life will be held (by invitation) in Memory of Lorraine in the spring of 2023 near her 75th birthday in their beautiful yard in smith.
