Helen Lenore Ellsworth, 91, died peacefully on Friday November 4, 2022, at University Hospital,
London, Ontario. Lenore was born on June 19, 1931, the dearly loved daughter of the late Chris
and Bill Ross. She married Frank Ellsworth in 1955 and treasured their special years together before his early death in 1958. She raised their two daughters while teaching school, caring for her parents, studying at university and pursuing a variety of musical and crafting interests.
Lenore loved music and children. She attended Steele Street Elementary and Port Colborne High School before earning her teaching certificate from Hamilton Normal School in 1950. Lenore taught primary and kindergarten students in Ridgeway and Port Colborne until her retirement from teaching in 1989 after many years at DeWitt Carter Public School. She treasured each of her students and their families. She also loved learning and enjoyed her studies at Brock University (BA) and Niagara University (MEd).
The Port Colborne Operatic Society played an important role in Lenore’s life. During its founding
years she was a piano accompanist and subsequently a member of the chorus for many years. She also enjoyed singing in the Port Colborne Chorale during her retirement. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and active in many church activities. Lenore was an advocate for the importance of early childhood education and was instrumental in encouraging the creation of the Helen Kinnear Children’s Centre. She also loved a variety of crafts, and she was particularly fond of knitting. She knit innumerable sweaters, socks, mittens and hats for family, friends and charities, created many cross stitches for gifts, and enjoyed quilting.
Above all else, Lenore loved her family and spending time with her grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by her daughters Chris (Doug Cane) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Joan (Peter Ashmore) of London; her grandchildren, Hannah and Alison Cane, Emma (Eric DeVooght), Ian, Tim (Emily Molcjan), and Nick Ashmore; and her great grandson Elliot Ashmore. She was an extraordinary grandmother. Lenore is also survived by sisters-and brothers-in-law Pat and Jay Climenhaga, Cathy and John Ellsworth, Jane Simser and Betty Ellsworth.
The family extends sincere thanks to her medical team at University Hospital, to the PSW workers who provided care for Lenore, and to her dear friends Phyllis Davidson and Lorraine Hampel.
The Ellsworth family will receive visitors at the DAVIDSON FUNERAL HOME, 135 Clarence Street, Port Colborne on Saturday, November 12, 2022 from 11:00 am until the time of the funeral service in the Davidson Chapel at 1:00 pm. Private family burial will be held at Ridgeway Memorial Cemetery.
