Kenneth (Ken) Walters
Ken Walters was an extraordinary man. His heart was larger than his broad chest; his compassion and generosity were limitless.
Ken grew up on a beautiful farm in the small town of Schutt, Ontario. His wife, Mildred, lived close by on a neighbouring farm. They married and moved to Chalk River in 1966. Ken delivered milk for the Laurentian View Dairy and became an honorary member of the Blimkie family. He later worked for the LCBO in Deep River, a job that turned into a career. He became the manager and spent decades enjoying his customers and giving them a ‘hard time,’ as he’d always say.
Ken had many passions including his friends and family, Christmas celebrations, watching hockey, playing cards, and enjoying a good stiff drink. He loved being at the trailer on Mink Lake. He’d sit in his chair, overlooking the water and listening to his radio. He loved talking and laughing with his campsite neighbours over a blazing fire. He was famous for his unique horseshoe throw. He enjoyed living outdoors which often meant fishing, hunting, golfing, gardening, or shovelling. Watching Konnor and Paige play sports made him gleam with pride. He took great pleasure in canning pickles and beans and could always be found frying bacon and eggs on the weekends. Nothing, however, compared to the joy he felt when his girls and their families came to visit.
In his retirement years he was always busy. He was notorious for his to-do lists. They were posted on the basement fridge and were constantly running through his head. If you came to visit, he’d give you one too. The more accomplished in a day, the better he slept at night. His work ethic was second to none.
Ken became a volunteer driver for the Canadian Cancer Society and the North Renfrew Long-Term Care Centre. Mildred also volunteered and coordinated patient appointments with available drivers. Together they served countless families in the community with their hospitality and compassion.
Ken was the beloved husband of 55 years to Mildred (nee Weichenthal), loving father to Elaine McGee (Ed) and Janice Carisse (Sean), brother to Glen Walters (Carolyn), Orlee Fraser (Rick), Judy Fleguel (Manson), Everett Walters (Dolores), and Joy Plunkett (Gord), adoring Poppa to Konnor Levesque (Chrissa) and Paige Carisse, and Great-Poppa to Everleigh and Mirabella Levesque. He was son of the late Irvin and Pearl Walters and son-in-law to the late Andrew and Mary Weichenthal. He will be missed and treasured by his sisters-in-law and his many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 20 at 11:00 a.m. at the Deep River Community Church. If wishing to make a charitable donation, please donate in Ken’s name to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute or the North Renfrew Long-Term Care Centre.
