Kathleen («Kay») Mary Escombe was born in Kelowna to Reginald and Capitola Stubbs on November 9, 1941. She passed away peacefully on December 7 with family at her side.
Kay’s family was a big one: she was one of four sisters and seven brothers. Shortly after she was born, her family moved to a big acreage in what was then a rustic frontier region: Lake Country. There they built a farm overlooking Okanagan Lake and eventually developed the property – a road there still bears the family name.
Kay had a very happy childhood and she enjoyed telling stories and sharing memories about her large and boisterous family. She learned to play guitar and sing – both passions that remained with her throughout her life.
In 1967, Kay met a dashing young Englishman, Tom Escombe, who she would wind up marrying and being stuck with for the next 55 years. Together they raised two children: Jesse and Amber, in their home on Seaton Road.
Kay was a creative person, always with a project on the go, and particularly enjoyed sewing and decorating her home.
Kay remained close with her sisters and brothers throughout her life and was a beloved sister, auntie, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. A devout Christian, she was deeply dedicated to her faith, attending church with her sister Janice and dedicating her time to play and sing for people in care. Kay made friends easily and will be missed by many.
Kay was pre-deceased by her brothers Reginald, Lawrence, James, David, Philip, Maurice and Frank, and her sisters Wilma and Eunice. She is survived by her sister Janice, husband Tom, children Jesse (Lori) and Amber (Andrew), grandchildren Chelsea, Dustin, Cassia, Amelia and Seamus, and great-grandchildren Brooke, and Lucas together with many, many nieces and nephews and other extended family, all of whom she loved very much.
There will be a celebration of life held at the Okanagan Centre Hall, 11099 Maddock Avenue in Lake Country at 1:00pm for those who want to join.
