It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Allister Wood, of Auld’s Cove, beloved husband of Christena “Chrissie” (Chisholm). Joe passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, at the R. K. MacDonald Nursing Home in Antigonish, N.S.
Born in Antigonish on October 3, 1935, Joe was the fifth of fourteen children born to the late John and Jessie (MacAskill) Wood.
Joe spent his life building homes, crafting furniture, and repairing just about anything. He was a master carpenter and skilled craftsman. As a child, he learned to build by watching his grandfather, Allan MacAskill. At the age of 12, Joe’s first major construction project was a pig house, made at the request of his mother. Years later, he used the skills learned as a boy to build houses for several family members, including his own home, where he and his wife raised their five children. Over the years, Joe generously shared his construction, renovation, and repair talents with numerous relatives and friends.
Joe worked on the construction of the Canso Causeway, from its beginning in 1952 to its completion in 1955, driving a Euclid. He spent several years diamond drilling for bedrock in various locations across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland. He then began working in the construction industry, building houses. He worked at Expo ’67 in Montreal, where he was employed on the construction of the German Beer Restaurant and Recreation Center. After returning home, Joe was hired by Transport Canada as the maintenance supervisor at the Canso Canal. After 25 years of service, he retired in 1996.
Joe enjoyed fishing, hunting, and sports. Anyone who knew Joe knew of his dry wit and great sense of humour. He enjoyed music, especially country music. He and Chrissie went every year for 18 years to the Hank Snow Memorial Festival on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. He loved to travel. He took trips to Ottawa, Montreal, and British Columbia. The trip of his lifetime was one made to Bermuda.
Joe was very proud of his family and all their achievements. He was especially proud to celebrate his 60th wedding anniversary on September 15, 2022.
He is survived by his wife, and children: Janice(Paul Nelson), St. Margaret’s Bay; Carolyn (John DeLorey), Antigonish; Charlotte (Byron Butt), Bridgewater; Daryl (Marcela Zecca), Dartmouth; and Donald (Kim Sirois), Ottawa; nine grandchildren: Janine DeLorey (Mike Ouellette); Candace DeLorey (Duncan Pulsifer); Danielle (Kenneth) Beaton; Rebecca DeLorey; Christine (Konnell) Phyne; Nathaniel Butt; Angelina Butt; Colin Wood; and Reid Loveless; sisters: Margie (Leo) Meagher, Auld’s Cove; Barbara Thompson, Antigonish; brothers: Danny (Jean), Cape Jack; Vincent (Annie), Port Hawkesbury; and Larry (Linda), Auld’s Cove; sisters-in-law: Mary Wood, and Eileen Wood, both of Auld’s Cove.
He was predeceased by sisters: Mary (Vincent) Fougere, Laura (Russell) Fougere, and Mary Carol, in infancy; brothers: Jackie, Ken (Catherine), Bernie (Sharon), Allan, and Ronnie (Bernadette); brother-in-law: Gary Thompson.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Thursday December 22 in the Mulgrave and Area Resting Place. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday December 23 at St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church, Mulgrave with Rev. Allan MacPhie officiating.
