Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that the family of John Tony Lawrence Sekulich announces his peaceful passing on Monday, March 22, 2021, at Loch Lomond Village with family by his side. Born in Thunder Bay, Ontario on June 18, 1941, he was the youngest of three of the late Mary (Rudyk) and John Sekulich.
John was a passionate golfer whose love for the game was evident to anyone who got to play a round with him. He passed on this passion to his children to whom he introduced the game at a young age. John was proud of the fact he played a round of golf in every Canadian province and the Northwest Territories. In his younger years, he owned and trained racehorses and remained an admirer of the sport long after he ceased being actively involved. In later life, one of John’s favorite hobbies was fantasy baseball and fantasy hockey. John spent his entire career as a papermaker, beginning at the paper mill in his native Thunder Bay. In 1964, he moved to Saint John, NB to begin what would become a 25-year career at Rothesay (Irving) Paper. His last chapter as a papermaker took him to Whitecourt, Alberta where he served in management as a Shift Coordinator until he retired in 2003. John gave back to his community through his time with the Knights of Columbus. He was recognized for exemplary service with the Knights in both Saint John and Whitecourt. His golden years were often split between his riverfront residence in Quispamsis and his winter home in Largo, Florida. He had a great sense of humour and loved nothing more than sharing stories and laughs with family and friends.
John will be deeply missed by his wife of 54 years, Dodie (nee Randon), his son Tony, his daughter Helen-Marie, and his grandchildren Jackson and Allyson Grace. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by brother Edward, sister Helen (Peter), sisters-in-law Carol Adams (Ross), Margaret Randon, and son-in-law Ian Hayward. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to all of John and Dodie’s extended family and close friends whose help through recent months will never be forgotten, as well as to the staff of the Village for all the care and compassion shown to John.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. Ann’s Church, 135 Simpson Drive on Saturday, July 30th at 10:00 am. Interment will take place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be sent to The Loch Lomond Village, Canadian Cancer Society, or the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
