FRANEY, John Melbourne ~ 93, formerly of Aylesford, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 18, 2022, in Shannex Orchard Court, Kentville. Born in Weston, Kings Co., N.S., John was the son of the late Melbourne and Edith (Newcombe) Franey. John is survived by his wife of 67 years, Frances (Parker) Franey; daughter, Sarah Keddy; son, Stephen (Linda) Franey; grandchildren, Elizabeth Keddy (Roberto Giglio); Matthew Keddy; Meaghan (Dana) Mills; Mark (Lucy) Franey; John R. Franey; great grandchildren, Juno and Azura Franey; Elias Mills and Sara Giglio; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, siblings, Albert (Marjorie); Frances Wilkinson (Robert); Phyllis Foster (George); Phillip (in infancy); and son-in-law, Jim Keddy; also inlaws, Robert (Anne), Mildred, Vera, Charles (Reta), Kenneth (Isabelle) Parker; and Helen (Earle) Giles. John’s teaching journey took him from Viewmount as a young graduate to Welsford, Kings County, then on to Avonport and Lower Wolfville while studying at Acadia University, to Lockeport and in 1956 to the new West Kings District High School where he spent the bulk of his career. A French specialist, John continued to study throughout the years, spending summers in Quebec and France, as well as summer school at Dalhousie and Acadia. John was a faithful member of the Aylesford United Church, serving for many years as an Elder on the Board of Session, the Clerk of Session, a member of the Committee of Stewards, Sunday School Teacher, and as a member at large for Valley Presbytery. He was proud of his children and especially enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren as they were growing up. John was keenly interested in genealogy and shared that with his son Stephen. He was a member of Kings Historical Society and spent many hours volunteering both there and driving for “Meals on Wheels”. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, July 29, in Aylesford United Church, 2414 Highway 1, Aylesford. Rev. John Moses officiating, with a reception following. Interment will be at Aylesford United Church Cemetery. Donations in memory can be made to the Aylesford United Church, Kings Historical Society, or a charity of your choice.
