Swallow, John Cranswick
October 1, 1933 – February 14, 2022
It is with both profound sadness and joyful Christian hope that we announce the peaceful passing of John Swallow on Monday, February 14, 2022 in his 89th year. John was a devoted and adored husband of 63 years to Margaret Swallow (nee Auld) and a loving and beloved father to Stephen Swallow (Karen), Jane Orlando (Joe), Scott Swallow (Anne) and Susan Isaac (Chris). “Papa” was an exuberant and doting grandfather to his grandchildren Amy Van Eyk (Todd), Joe Orlando (Brittany), Florence Anikejew (Peter), Peter Swallow (Sarah), Melanie Swallow (Simon Zijlstra), Benjamin Swallow, Emma Isaac and William Isaac, and to his great-grandchildren Gregory Orlando, Claire Orlando, Charlie Orlando, Scotia Anikejew, Sterling Anikejew, Wesley Swallow and Liam Swallow. “Uncle John” will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by a host of nieces and nephews in whom he always took great pride and keen interest. Predeceased by his parents, John and Norma Swallow (nee Cline), and siblings Muriel Smith, Harold Swallow, Earl Swallow, Isabel Taylor and Adrienne Walters, John is survived by one older sister, Kathleen Bastian. Also left to mourn are the families of John’s in-laws, Ruth Schmidt (deceased), Beverly Auld, David Auld, Dorothy Roussy and Cathy Stevenson.
John enjoyed a long, distinguished career as a chartered accountant at Crawford, Smith & Swallow which he and the late Robert F. Smith—his good friend and business partner of more than 60 years—grew into one of Niagara’s largest, most successful accounting firms. A product of the Great Depression, John never forgot the insecurities and indignities of childhood poverty—and one of his life’s enduring passions was caring for the hungry and destitute both at home and abroad. Over the years, his generosity touched—and changed—the lives of many.
John took a genuine interest in others and carefully nurtured meaningful and enduring friendships with individuals from every conceivable walk of life. A well-read man of wide-ranging interests, he was a skilled conversationalist and raconteur possessed of a lively intellect, a quick wit, a compassionate spirit and a vibrant faith. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
John’s family wish to extend a special thanks to Hospice Niagara’s Palliative Care Outreach Team (especially nurses Colleen and Jocelyn and physician Dr. Deborah Dooler), to John’s wonderful team of PSWs (especially Susan, Tammy and John), to our good friend Dr. Wesley Reimer, and to John’s many other faithful friends for their kindness, support and encouragement over the past number of months.
