Swartzack, Joan Benedict,
age 93 of Antigonish passed away on December 28, 2022 in St.
Martha’s Regional Hospital,
Antigonish.
Born in Sydney
Mines, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Ann (MacLean)
Burchell.
Joan was a
graduate of Nova Scotia Normal College. She taught in Halifax, Sydney
Mines and Antigonish town and county. She was a very
dedicated, and well-respected teacher and reading
specialist. She enjoyed badminton, golf, leisurely walks and
the annual family summer trips to the Highlands of Cape Breton. She
was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Her family aways
came first in her life.
She is
survived by her husband of sixty-five years, Eugene; children: Joe,
Antigonish; Mary (Greg) Hines, Halifax; Eunice (John) Coupland,
Halifax; Kay (Kevin) Rodney, Ottawa; grandchildren: Melissa, Alex,
Mitch, Brandon, Madison, Jordan; brothers in law, Gerry MacLean and
Bill Merritt; as well as nieces and
nephews.
She was
predeceased by her sister, Elizabeth (Leonard) Arsenault, Emma Merritt
and Ann MacLean.
The family
would like to thank Joan’s long-time physician, Dr. Brian
Steeves, Antigonish, Dr. Naida Leckey, Halifax, the
Palliative Care staff of St. Martha’s Regional Hospital and
special thanks to Melissa, RN, Halifax for the care they provided to
Joan.
Funeral Mass
will be held in St. Ninian Cathedral on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at
11:00 am. Burial at a later date. Donations in
memory may be made to Canadian Cancer Society or charity of
