Jean Shumborski 2022

Obituary for
Jean Shumborski
On Monday, May 30, 2022, our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Jean Shumborski stepped into eternity! She was swept away from the pains and struggles of this life into the presence of her loving Saviour and Lord.
Jean was born on November 23, 1927, in Hrushvytsia, Ukraine. Her family immigrated to Canada in 1930 fleeing the Holodomor (Great Famine). They settled around Tomahawk, Alberta where they purchased a farm. Jean’s family consisted of her parents, Vasyl and Mokryna Wolodko; and three older brothers, Edward (Nadia), Bill (Nina) and Alex (Olga). Two older sisters had died in childhood while in Ukraine.
After completing high school in Tomahawk, Jean attended the University of Alberta to become a teacher like her brother Bill. In 1948 she left school to marry Andrew Shumborski living near Rochfort Bridge, Alberta. They raised 6 children, Terry (Robyn), Bill (Donna), Steven (Myla), Robert (Ulrike) Sandra (Philip Luchka) and Beth (Mathuik). Jean taught in Rochfort Bridge and Mayerthorpe over that time, retiring in 1992 after 27 years.
Jean enjoyed her retirement with gardening, reading, crocheting, spending time with children and grandchildren. She attended their ballet recitals, hockey and baseball games. Jean was her grandchildren’s greatest fan! She also was a great fan of the opera. In 2007, Jean moved from Mayerthorpe to Lethbridge where she lived until her death.
Jean became a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ when she was in her late 60s. She said that she drove by a little church in her neighbourhood and God was prompting her to go there. Hallelujah and glory to God for granting her the most precious gift one can receive—entrance into His beautiful, glorious, eternal presence! Thank you, Lord Jesus for your well of grace and mercy that never runs dry and is available to all who will humbly call upon your holy, merciful name.
Jean leaves to mourn her children and their spouses as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren Sarah (Will) Fraser, Emily (Andrew) Stewart and children Elliot and baby George, David Shumborski, Victoria (Donald) Fung, William (Naomi) Luchka and Jessica Luchka (Andrew Gascoyne) as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
