Obituary
Jeanine was born on April 15, 1930, to Madeleine and Charles Prince in Turtleford, Saskatchewan. She and her older sister, Beatrice, were raised on the family farm south of Paradise Hill. When Jeanine was only 13 years old, she was sent to Battleford to live and attend school at the Convent of the Child Jesus. Two years later, she continued her education in Saskatoon at Sion Academy and then Normal School to earn her teaching certificate. Upon her return to Paradise Hill in 1947 she began her teaching career and taught at various schools in the area.
Jeanine met Leonard Trask in Paradise Hill and they were married in 1951. After living and working in St Walburg for a couple of years, they moved to her grandfather’s homestead in 1953 where they raised their two sons, Mike and Bob, and farmed together for 39 years. She loved farm life and was a hard worker, never afraid of getting her hands dirty. As her family was growing, she and Leonard spent many hours driving the boys to and from the hockey rinks and baseball diamonds.
They also loved to play cards with their neighbours and when their granddaughters came along, she taught them about life on the farm. She told them endless stories of people and places she knew of, often with the help of one of the many quilts she had made. She was always willing to get down to their level to play, although it was not far compared to most people being the petite lady that she was. After Leonard’s sudden passing in 1992, Jeanine remained on the farm until 1998 when she moved into town, next door to her sister.
Having fewer responsibilities in town than she did on the farm, she was able to travel more. She did countless bus tours covering North America from Alaska and the Yukon, to Florida, California and the Maritimes. Her favourite trips were to the Maritimes and New Orleans where she learned more about her Acadian Heritage and of course, out to Victoria to visit the Butchart Gardens. Living in town also gave her the advantage of being able to walk down for daily coffee at Lam’s Cafe to visit with Ada and some of her dearest friends, Marianne Dundas, Eleanor Hyndman, Alba Palsich, her sister, Beatrice Novlan, and other ladies from town.
She eventually moved to Victoria, BC in 2013 where she resided until her passing. There she enjoyed the mild climate that lent to beautiful spring flowers and the opportunity to see her sons regularly, visits from her granddaughters, and eventually her great-grandsons, who always brought her great joy.
Having lived a long and fulfilling life, Jeanine was predeceased by her mother, Madeleine; her father, Charles; her husband, Leonard; her sister, Beatrice; her brother-in-law, Clem; and all 10 of Leonard’s siblings and their spouses. She leaves behind her sons, Michael and Robert (Anne); her granddaughters, Stephanie (Tyler) and Brittany (Max); and her great-grandsons, Jack and Sawyer.
A formal memorial service will not be held for Jeanine, however the family will return to Paradise Hill to lay her ashes to rest next to her late husband in the spring of 2023. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Parkinson Canada.
